Aside from the knowledge and the career prospects, one of the best things about a university education is that it delays you from entering the rat race and daily grind that can last fifty years and probably longer in future. I graduated at 21 never took any time off, but I now tell young people to take gap years and travel, see the world, try different things, grow, learn, and change; and above all don't be tied down to a lifelong career just because when you were a spotty teenager you were good at remembering and reproducing facts on certain subjects. Life is a long long marathon not a super sprint. You have to find your life, not fall into it.

Statistics don't lie. On average, you will earn more with a degree than without. Not to say that you can't be successful without college. Obviously, many are. However, I would always advise my children to get a degree all other things being equal.

Never went to college and I still have a Rolex thread
I think college is never a bad thing. I would rather have a society full of educated people than not, as it is essential for a healthy and functioning democracy.
There seems to be a lot of focus on wether a degree is "worth it" and I would say that has to do with the ridiculous amount of money it takes to get one these days so people want an ROI. And that ROI varies widely depending on a number of factors. As far as success is concerned, timing and luck are just as important as hard work and perseverance in my experience. By the way, I have more than one degree, don't need it for my work at the moment, but it has enriched my life and was worth it for me. I'm not saddled within debt or I may say otherwise lol. |
