I never cared much for the LV...but they are growing on me. Love the maxi plot / old lug combo.

Enjoy!
You know, I'm loving the LV. I like the case, the bracelet is very comfy and much lighter than the newer versions and the maxi dial seals the deal for me. I'd thought about the LN, but I like the maxi dial.

I think your money is safe. I would be too tempted to wear them though. I don't have the strength to execute this strategy. Like port wine, I love it but don't have the patience to buy a 2011 and wait 20 years lol so I pay up for a 94/97 or whatever

My GMT Master II was purchased wholesale, and I know if I get tired of it (ha!) I can re-sell for a tidy profit.

My business is gold and silver bullion dealing. I have considered branching out into luxury watches (used only, I would never be able to qualify as an AD) but I do know that even if I just keep buying more watches they can be carried on my books as inventory.

Even if I only buy them for myself...

That's the only five digit model I'd consider going back to. I'm a one in one out guy. It's always nice to see people have fun with this hobby, no matter what the circumstances or reasons

cool idea, Rolex is definitely liquid asset.
Really no chance for them to depreciate, and since youre getting enjoyment out of this, I'd say this is a wise choice!

Why not? Mint-anything you sell later on usually commands a higher price than the same thing that isn't, and other things mint outpace depreciate more slowly then non- mint examples, and indeed become more valuable at a higher rate if deemed collectable by enough people. Acquiring an example and keeping it mint, playing a small game of ground-floor speculation with watches is no different than doing the same with coins, trading cards, or comic books. '69 Camaros were common and "meant to be driven". Most people did. I did, until the wheels fell off. Aquiring a mint one now will cost you north of $100,000.

I don't see why anyone would get any flak over doing this, nothing wrong with it just because the object is a watch. Watches are meant to be worn, coins are meant to be spent, baseball cards are meant to be traded, and comic books are meant to be read. Makes no difference, the pride and joy of many collections is a mint this or that, and the value is usually reflected accordingly, and command a higher price if sold.

Well, that's a pretty fantastic assessment. Well said.

Clearly, I agree. But you e summed it up nicely. Thank you.

Is there a definite answer on this 'dial error' question?

Seth congrats on your purchases and personally I think you wont loose any money on those at worst you will get out what you put in.. The key thing for me is the fun you have in the search on finding the pieces you want and then the pleasure of having them, wearing them and knowing what you have..

For me I would need to wear them to enjoy them as I am not disciplined enough to have them in a safe, the real investment for me is the joy of seeing them on my wrist as I chill with friends..

Seth I think they look great.

I hope you enjoy them and I will be very interested to see how you get on financially with them. Worst case scenario, I can't see you loosing much if anything on them long term (famous last words!!!) and I hope you gain in both enjoyment and money with them.

Rolex as an Investment

You won't make any money off watches unless you invest with Alfredo Paramico

Edit: that's more of a joke that legitimate advice

I think it is a smart move and only time will prove us all wrong or right.

But if history repeats itself as it so often does Seth had chosen wisely.

I Love This Thread !!

I love the fact that most people can't come to grips with the fact that an older SS sports model Rolex with stickers is an investment, ( A Very Good One At That Too ). I don't know why people can't wrap their heads around it.

I purchased my 18038 about a year ago and now when I look at the same example (year, model) all the prices I find in searches are about $2,000 more than what I had paid.

When I searched before I had purchased, the prices were around what I paid. Whether or not they are selling for the higher price of today I do not know.

But, it could be considered a good sign.

I've heard people of people buying gold watches for the gold when the economy goes down. Contrary to that, would they ever melt the watch if the economy tanked? If so, I doubt enough gold will come out to produce the value they intended.

In 2008, I bought a brand new 16610 LV from an AD with a little discount (I paid £2950) and kept it unworn and fully stickered until 2011 when I decided to sell it - For £5700 cash. I made a lot more profit than the equivilent cash in the bank..

In 2008 I bought a GMT 16710 M-Series with 25% discount for 3330 Euro with 2 additional bezels from my AD. Kept it unworn and stickered. Now I could sell it for about 20.000 Euro.

I can concur to these prices being payed here in Europe.
The 16710 with 3186 doubled in the last year. December 2014 I sold mine (NOS) for 9500€ which was the going rate then...after that it started increasing with a 1000 a month, ending up at around 20K today.

Go figure...

Different strokes for different folks.
A watch, a readily accessible Rolex watch is an investment?
I hope that is not anyone's retirement plan or avenue to acquire wealth.
Whatever flips your boat.

I call it a purchase of an item to wear and enjoy in good health. Should it retain value, whoopie!

Basically when paying for a pre-owned example you are paying roughly half for the gold and half for the timepiece, movement, craftsmanship. At least, that's how I look at it in my case. I've always loved and bought gold, not necessarily to sell but because I enjoy it. :D

So why don't you sell it? You will never be able to wear and enjoy it anyway. Do you think it will appreciate more or do you have an emotional tie to it?

Anyone going into a Rolex purchase thinking its an investment either shouldn't be buying one or will undoubtedly be disappointed with their purchase in due time.
