Happened to me just last week. Went into an AD and was trying on a few pieces. Had put my Sub C down and the associate quickly grabbed it. Said not to leave it on the tray because it was such an in demand piece and was worried someone might walk out of the store with it. I thought it was odd but kept trying on pieces and then glanced down and it was gone! Had a heart attack for a moment and then realized the associate hid it under a polishing cloth. The whole experience made me uncomfortable so I grabbed my watch and quickly left

I’ve had an SA picked up my LV and started to clean it with the cloth. I am ok with that. What would make me mad is if a random customer picks up my watch.

I’ve had a tourneau SA picked up my SD43 (purchased from another AD) and said it’s a fake just by how heavy it feels. I had a good laugh.

They should ask you, if you mind them picking it up.

I can see how that would be annoying. For me it depends on the SA and whether or not I get a good vibe. I've been lucky enough to deal with a lot of SAs who are watch fans themselves and who are decent guys so I don't mind.

I once had the opposite problem where an SA I didn't know handed over his batman for me to take a look at.

I was at an AD in Oregon; the very sweet lady sales associate asked if she could clean up by SkyD (which she did). It seems like a much nicer approach then just grabbing and fondling (as well as less obvious).

Yes, it happen to me went to a AD ask to try on a Rolex. I placed my vacheron overseas on the tray. She picked up my vacheron looked at it and took it to the back room. I placed the Rolex I was trying on back on the pad on the counter. She put the Rolex back in the showcase and walked away. I had to ask her what she do with my watch and she looked confused. I got my watch back but wow that was strange.

Ha Ha this is so true. Most watch stores do this from what I've experienced. I don't mind but I'd prefer they placed it back in the same position I had it sitting - I usually place my watch on it's side versus laying it flat down on the bracelet.

I was just going to write the same lol, they ALWAYS set it down with the bracelet rubbing against the caseback makes me cringe every time

I was trying on a DD from a random AD.
The SA picked up my mint 2016 116520 without asking and inspected it.
She said she'll personally give me $12K USD for it.

I said sure, only IF she'll sell me a 500C at retail.
She quickly put my watch back down.

How about this..... switch your watch to your right wrist while you try on the one you probably cant afford ...no one gets to touch your watch or take it in the back room or run out the front door with it!!!! Problem solved!!! And apparently this will drive these perverted SAs crazy who are dying to fondle your baby!!!!

It happened to me as well, I was trying on a watch in Tourneau and the salesperson picked up my Cartier and began looking at it through a loupe. He called another salesperson over to look at it and then told me about the hidden Cartier name in the numbering. I was a little perplexed, because there was a whole case full of Cartier watches in the store. I guess they were really checking for authenticity. I wasn’t concerned at the time, but after I thought about it, it was in poor taste.

Reminds me of an experience I had when the Apple Watch was originally released. I stopped by an Apple store to try one on, I took off my Rolex and put it on the soft apple leather tray and then the associate picked it up and and put it down roughly on the wood surface next to the leather pad. I was immediately put off and the associate said the leather tray was only for Apple watches. Ridiculous.

Happens to me about 50% of the time when not at an AD that knows me. Usually the SA has a white glove on. Almost certain they are checking for authenticity to gauge whether I am a legit buyer. Nowadays they often comment about how hard to get SS Professionals are to get and how lucky I am to have gotten one. I usually laugh and say when I got this, the whole line was in the case!

I did have to laugh when the other day at a multi brand dealer, I tried on a mix of watches. Between each watch, the associate had to switch white gloves noting that each make required them to wear a particular glove when showing their brand of watch. He looked perplexed when he couldn't find the glove with the AP logo.

Haha, a tray for the Apple watch only. ... then they should have a big fluffy pillow for your Rolex. .. some people just don't see what's more important. .. Apple Watch or a Rolex. No comparison.. SMH. .;)

My spouse nor child handles my watch and it would be a cold day in hell before some stranger does.
And I'm sure many are surprised at this response.

Has happened to me, although not specifically at T. Most will ask permission and its fine. I had a woman pick up my royal oak and look at it then casually set it down and I cringed a bit thinking she was not being careful with the finish. She probably thought it was cheap seeing as most Rolex sales people I meet do not know much outside their product range.

That is nice, 3 out of 4 times I look at a watch from an AD or Grey I have to ask for a cloth to wipe the thing down so I can see the dial and finish, almost want to ask for a commission for doing their presenting job for them.

Concern over mishandling aside, I think some of us (myself included) just get bothered by the thinly veiled act of ‘admiring the watch’ as a pretext for trying to discern whether or not it’s genuine as a means of qualifying the potential customer.

I had an assistant manager at an Omega boutique ask if she could pick up my Datejust on the tray while I was trying on an Aqua Terra. She inspected it closely and commented that she wasn’t familiar with that bracelet ...I asked her if this was the first time she ever saw a Rolex, because the Jubilee bracelet had been around for over 70 years.
