Pardon me, but this whole thread seems like a lot of angst over a not uncommon practice by a clumsy AD.

'Free money?' That's what a 'desired', 'hot' model is to you? Sad, sad times.

Let's be honest, what did you expect. I mean I think they can do it more elegantly, without offering a quid pro quo and trying to push shit on you, something like: "I am sorry, this is a desired watch that gets allocated to our best clients.", but at the end of the day no matter how it would be executed it's what it would boil down to. Same thing.

I'd have smiled and politely declined. I'm amazed you even got through to Rolex, let alone a returned call. That in itself is a win!

I don't get the drama and heartache either.

It's a negotiation like so many others that people encounter every day. The store owner was trying to persuade OP to buy something with the leverage he believed he had. He pushed the envelope, OP called, end of story.

It is no different than me saying to the car sales person: "if you can throw in a maintenance plan then we have the deal." I push the envelope to maximize my benefit knowing the other side will do the same. Isn't this how negotiation is all about?

Yeah a fair negotiation goes that way not when it goes on one person’s favor

If your original AD is treating you well, then why don’t you stick to them? There are horrible SAs and Owners out there but its business at the end of the day, money is yours, if you don’t like the deal you are getting and feel like not treated well, walk away.

Explain how? What’s your point here?

I’m a customer nonetheless. Pain in the ass or not.

I came in with the intent to purchase two watches one for me one for my wife.

Everything was great watches were pulled out and shown and I agreed to purchase until owner came out blazing guns like buy this diamond and I’ll sell you everything.

Or just buy the datejust.

What’s a not a pain in the ass customer in your opinion? Should I have bent over no lube? Or what?

As mentioned before, Rolex should just allow North American ADs to set prices higher. Then we would know what is available and what they expect. And decline or accept as we see fit. Would be much easier than the current process.

So that datejust is going to sit inside the case in his store for months.... Instead of making 2 sales he made zero.

It's stories like this that reinforce my rejection of Rolex ADs and others who sell them.

More than happy to give my $$$ to Omega, Breitling and Zenith.

What thieves. I would have told them I was calling Rolex to report their business practices then I would have called Rolex and done exactly that and finally, told Rolex all my future purchases would be from gray dealers who also overcharge but are nice about it.

(mods, I'd like to enter this in the longest sentence contest, thanks!)

This particular AD is well known for these shady practices and also taking cash under the table for hard to get pieces. I went into this same AD last year was told basically, I have no chance at any Sports models unless I bought crap jewelry from them first. I just went asking for a ND Sub. It's not like the op asked for a white faced Daytona or a Blue Sky dweller.
This AD is also Patek dealer, I can't even imagine the shit you gotta buy to get hard to get Patek pieces.

If you are an AD and a random person walks into your store asking for models that sell at huge premiums in the gray market, why should you believe they are “true collectors”? They hear that all the time. Wake up to reality. Value for a value.

Wow, and the GMT LN was the dog of the line but 2 years ago. I’m so glad I don’t even humour such games.

The main reason I don't buy from the AD. In the time I wait for one stainless steel piece I can buy nearly the entire collection.

AD - Authorized Distributor. Wouldn't it be easier if they just referred us on to the folks they are selling to, rather than play these games.

Just for discussion's sake...you can probably have the GMT from a grey dealer at or about $14-$15K. With box and papers. Is there any argument against going that route?

Honestly I would’ve given him the cash funny enough if he asked for it would’ve made me feel better about it but because he told me I need to buy some trash might aswell have thrown the cash his way but he told me he doesn’t need cash lol

You represent a brand. It’s your duty to sell the watch to the person. ESPECIALLY when you’re bragging about having it. He could’ve easily said he doesn’t have the watch and left it at that.

But he went on to say he had it and it’s brand new and I have to spend more money to get it. Not sure what’s hard to understand here. Rolex is a brand and if any ad had a watch and tells the customer they have it they have to sell it at retail price not jack it up and pair with some trash.

These Rolex AD games will eventually hurt the brand as a whole.

Good honest AD's are getting harder to come by.

Sorry for your experience OP, but you did the right thing - kudos to you - it's only a watch.
