It’s tough. Best advice I give myself is to not gain the weight in the first place. Losing a bunch of weight is depressing and puts your body under significant stress.

Not only that, but the cravings for carbs and garbage food when drinking and also the morning after. It's becoming just about impossible to drink and stay in shape after 50. If not for college football, I'd be on the wagon permanently.

Echoing what others say about it being a lifestyle, not a crash course.
I was also fit from my teens into mid 20’s. Really focused on weight lifting and strength (body building style) Life priorities change, knees start to hurt, and next thing you know I go from 225lbs with an 8 pack to 250+ and a gut. Last year at this time I decided to make a change and get back in shape but in a more long term, sustainable way, that won’t get me injured or burnt out. Lifestyle change. Cut out all alcohol, sweets, pizza, etc. Lift weights 6x a week. Cardio 6x a week at 30 min at brisk walk on incline. Have 4-5 meals a day, always high protein. No food after 7pm. Not measured food but I try and practice some portion control. 1 year later and I’m Down approx 30 lbs to 220lbs, have top 4 abs showing. I’m much less muscular than I used to be and my strength is down a bit, but my heart feels calmer and my joints don’t ache anymore. I feel at my best. I allow myself 2-3 drinks once a week but I usually go a month without alcohol as I kind of lost the desire to drink. I still don’t have any deserts except for the family birthday occasions. I found some frozen yogurt 80 cal bars that I will go to if I find I’m losing my mind. Those hit the spot and I don’t feel guilty. Overall I’m happy with where i am and want to just slowly recomp a bit more. I could lose more weight but then I’d be too small and weak, so it’s slow and steady for me. I vowed to never let myself go again. I have friends who went on crash course keto diets and such and it worked but a few months later they are back to where they started. Not saying it’s not good, but for some people it’s not a realistic life style and they can’t last and revert. I found this works for me. The hard part is finding something that works for you as an individual that you can do day in and day out for years and years. Consistency is everything. My .02 |

What they never mention in the tabloid is breaking up from a relationship. With that said. A couple of weeks ago I tested not to eat for 5 days. It was a test to see if I could do it. More a mental and character test than anything else. Just drank mineral water, water with some salt in and a couple of espressos a day. I quickly lost a few kilos. Fasting a day every few weeks since then. Eating carnivore diet more or less strictly and exercise regularly.

At least a slightly strict diet (cut some calories) and exercise (running) does the trick for me.
