While I agree completely the seller totally misrepresented this watch lets not get carried away with calling it a $1500 watch. Someone like Dalton could work their magic and bring this watch back to life. The bracelet is another matter though. Funny thing I'm almost certain this watch would sell for close to $3K (assuming it has box, papers) on Ebay even with an accurate description and detailed pics.

Sorry to hear what happened. On the bright side, if you have to keep it, a standard service and case polish will get MOST of that out. The deeper scratches would likely remain, but it would probably look at least 95%. The bracelet does have some stretch, not sure how of that could be repaired.

Here is an update everyone...

TECHNICAL REVIEW :

This is the first time that your watch has been reviewed by Rolex Canada although it has been previously serviced by another watchmaker. Specially formulated oils and lubricants which protect the movement parts have dried out causing the watch to lose time. Due to the age of your watch which is approximately 9 years old, a full factory movement servicing with extra movement parts will be required. The cost of the extra parts and work will be reflected in the service price. We strongly recommend servicing approximately every five years as a way of maintaining your Rolex investment.

We have carefully reviewed the condition of the winding crown, case tube, crystal and all gaskets. Your watch is not waterproof in its present condition due to the worn and dented crown and tube which now need to be changed. New gaskets will be installed during the factory service.

There are slight chips around the edge of the sapphire crystal which are cosmetic and will not affect the waterproof quality of the watch. If you are interested in having a new sapphire crystal replaced during servicing, the retail price is $195.00 (plus tax).

The case is badly scratched and dented. We will endeavour to hand polish it as best as we can.

The bezel insert is scratched and worn. Should you wish to have a new bezel insert replaced during servicing, the retail price is $85.00 (plus tax).

The dial and set of matching hand are slightly discoloured due to age. If you are interested in having a new dial and set of matching hands replaced during servicing the retail price is $489.00 (plus tax).

As you requested, our estimate includes a new Rolex 20mm Stainless Steel Oyster Fliplock bracelet with 2 interchangeable extension links.

wow.. I would just say it is a lot of money to spend.. I can assure you that is not just regular standard service.. they are doing a complete overhaul of the watch.. and I am sure they will try to do their best... wonder if they could instead provide a new case..? would that be possible?

Personally, I'd go ahead with the service minus the new bracelet. Especially on a tool watch like a SD, they're made to get banged up. The original doesn't seem to be in too awful of shape except for some stretch. IMO, it's not worth the extra $1500.

IF you are going to keep the watch do the service minus the bracelet....at $1500 the bracelet is too much and you could find a nice used one on the forums for much less.

There is no way I would hold on to this stinker. I'already be filling formal complaints.

And with the damage assesment from Rolex you also have clear proof that the watch is trashed - comments like not waterproof, dents on case etc, make it pretty clear this is as bad as it gets.

I would not pay more than a few hundred for such a watch and even then it would be to have it as a 2nd banger to save my main SD. Get rid of it and get a new one.

Get your money back.
The only other option I would consider is if I only gave around $1200 for it. At that price it would make a good old daily basher and you would have some leeway to do it up bit by bit.

It was bad enough to see the outside of the watch in that condition. And to have Rolex state that the movement was neglected as well... Im thinking the seller was well aware of what he was selling !

However, you would have to consider that a " standard " service is usually in the works if you buy a watch with no service history or " as is " If it was mine, I would have Rolex do a service on the movement and case polish. And find a nice oyster bracelet elsewhare.
