Greg, thank you so much for the information provided in this thread.

I'm sure it's dependent on your relationship with an AD, but my question for now is how many pieces would constitute an order large enough that one could negotiate a significant discount?

not so much how many pieces, but the dollar amount is what has the heaviest effect. $50k and up usually starts getting you an acceptable discount.

Mike, my pleasure! Miami - too far in advance to tell, but knowing the weather in Ohio in November, I'll be itching to skip out to a warmer climate for a few days :)

, Let me know if you decide to & thanks for the assistance

Love this thread and thank you for sharing your knowledge Greg.

Many of my questions have been answered already, but I have a couple. How many pieces do you normally have in inventory and are there any particular model(s) that you hoard with the expectation that they will become hugely collectible in the future? Thank you.

Number of pieces really, really varies.

If hoard, only for personal reasons, otherwise - sell if you have an opportunity.

I guess I do have a question after all.

How did you you end up becoming a "Grey" dealer? And by that I mean:

a) You were a banker or something when your watch hobby got out of control and you realized you would be happier earning a living buying and selling

b) Worked for an AD and realized an opportunity

c) Took over you Father-in-law's business

d) Other

Again...great thread and thanks for starting it

Greg/Mosco, great thread!

One of the BEST threads of 2012! I have never brought from you yet but you are definitely one of the good TRF dealers! No questions yet but just want to say thanks for starting this thread.

By the way, I was reading the circumstances on how you joined TRF and it is just so funny when I compared to how you are posting now.

What is the weirdest city/town you ever ship a watch to?

ex : I once ship a watch to Tightwad Missouri. According to Wiki, population less than 80.

Thanks

The business was my start-up... "A" applies the best, I was a mortgage broker and realized that my heart was just not in it. Was making great money for a guy in the early 20's, but was absolutely miserable. With the growing usefulness of ebay, it became easier to start buying/selling/trading watches, rare books, and Hunter S. Thompson memorabilia (my 3 obsessions), so took a leap of faith and decided to do it full time.

Yeah... I am glad that took place, it definitely is an example of that whole "lemon/lemonade" saying in action

Well - it was more of an island, but when I saw "Phuket" on the shipping instructions, it made me giggle...

hey greg,

there's another thread floating around on subjective terms like "mint", etc.

what does "LNIB" and "mint" mean to you?

and, do you think your understanding is the general understanding among reputable re-sellers?

I have a First Edition (unsigned) copy of Hunter S. Thompson's classic Hell's Angels: A Strange and Terrible Saga with a decent dust jacket. It's a great read. I used to lend it out to friends until I found out it was worth a few bucks. Do you sell HST memorabilia on a forum site or just on eBay?

What a great idea for a thread Greg, thanks!

I understand that it's necessary for you sellers to hide the serial number of your watches to protect your sources. I've often wondered if there's any reason for the average joe (like me) to also block the serial number of a watch we happen to be selling on the forum.

Great thread Greg! I wish you all the success. I must admit when I first got in to watches years ago, I was a little leery of "Greys" (Sounds like those alien movies), but since knowing people like you and Tony (Just Rolexes) and David (DavidSW) I have completely changed my mind. Everyone I've met has been a professional in every way.

I have always, and think I always will buy my watches from walking in to ADs, we can get in to those reasons another time, but anyone that chooses to purchase from you guys can do so with confidence.

I guess I only have one question...

Can I be your new assistant!?!?!?

They mean nothing. It is all in an eye of the beholder. That's why one should examine pictures closely and ask for clarification if something is unclear.

And of course my understanding does not represent the 'general', because there is no 'general'. Everyone has a different business structure, degrees vary. These are my experiences.

Don't sell it at all anymore, too many fakes. Have 3 pieces myself - one of them is the last book he ever signed officially, a small print book called 'Fire in the Nuts", dated late November 2004...

As a rule of thumb - just do it, cover the serial. Less material out there for fakers is another reason I do it.

Thanks for your time on this. Lots of my questions answered already. Hope I didn't miss this one but...will you search for a specific watch for someone? Is this desirable for you as the sale is guaranteed or kind of a pain because you have to seek out specific models limiting your barganing power with your sources?

Searching for a specific watch for a client is not easy...we try our very best to give you the best price there is or match it...If its a guaranteed sale it shouldnt be a problem...sometimes there are clients that are really not ready to pull the trigger but will let you work your ass and demand the lowest price possible and in the end even if you have met his price..you just realized he not yet ready..
