I tried a few Hermes today, at first the orange Verte smelled great on my skin. But within minutes I could barely smell the orange, instead a really dark, earthy peppery smell. I noticed the same with Terre. It may very well be my tastes aren't that refined, don't know. But for the first minute I was all set to buy the orange Verte, then I was glad I hesitated, I guess I just don't like that dark, peppery smell so many of the really high end colognes like Hermes, Creed and Bond 9 seem to quickly morph into. I seem to prefer colognes that start off very sweet and citrusy, light and fresh, and pretty much stay that way, maybe changing into a slightly citrus, aquatic scent, which perhaps makes me a heathen if you read some reviews over on Basenotes, where the dark, earthy, green/woodsy/musk base notes seem to get a lot of praise.
I will say it might be the sort of thing one grows into or learns to appreciate. Which is why I returned with SAMPLES! :) |

It's funny, try to picture this: I'm a giant, 6'8", 350 lbs., my size 17 feet clad in 5 XL Crocs that look like small canoes, rarely clean shaven, I dress pretty poorly, faded T-shirt, gym shorts, so here I am sitting in the Saks fragrance dept, with these women giving me countless test strips, and I'm sitting there waving probably 50-75 strips all said and done under my nose, trying to see if anything really stands out, periodically lifting my head to ask something like: is that apple I smell? No honey, I think it's orange and ginger... :) Then ultimately, walking out with a bag full of samples of Creed, Bond, Hermes, etc. Objectively, it must have been a pretty hilarious scene. :)
I'm a pretty friendly, personable guy, still I wonder, would they have been as nice had I not been wearing my sparkly Sub C, visually my only real saving grace? :) |

And let me guess: you have a great handwriting
I suspect you got the love because any bloke willing to smell and try 50-75 colognes MUST surely be used to the finer things in life. I have never had a cologne smelling session thus far. Clearly I need to step it up Greg |

I gravitate toward the tobacco and musk type scents, which is why I like Hermes Terre. There's a store in NYC called FRESH that blends some good scents. They have a tobacco and caramel (don't laugh) cologne that is fantastic.

Walgreens???
Well knock me over with a feather! (not easy!) :)
Turns out, Walgreens, yes the mass chain pharmacy sells high end colognes. Including Creed, Hermes and others. Kind of hard to believe, but it's true, and the discounts are decent. They only have a few Creed scents, but good discounts on them. Like half price. So far I didn't find Creed or Hermes at either of my 2 local WG's, though they did have Dolce & Gabana, Armani, (ADG) many CK, etc. However, there's a good selection online. And as I discovered, it's free shipping, and I quickly found a coupon code (MORE5) that gives you $5 off. So, for example, the 3.3 oz. bottle of Hermes D'Orange Verte Concentree I saw at Saks yesterday for $110+ tax(about $120) I think it was, can be had from WG online for $73 shipped. And unlike some online discount shops, little chance of getting a fake, it's Walgreens after all. :) This should be exactly what I'm getting for 73 shipped, on Neiman Marcus' website for $107, plus shipping, and likely tax too. |

I am a big fan of Creed.
They are a OLD company and still controlled by the founding family Small and hard to find but a unique smell. I am partial to the "Tweed" offering but there are many great scents. They are not cheap by any means but unique.

Tried and bought a new one today.
Just picked up one I really like, Versace Pour Homme. Very fresh, citrusy aquatic, and Macy's has a good deal going. A gift set of a 3.4 oz., a 1 oz. travel size, an aftershave, and a shower gel, for $78. The 3.4 alone lists for 75. The 1 oz. is worth about $35 (well not really, but you know what I mean :) ). Seemed like a pretty good deal.
If you like light, crisp citrus/aquatics this one is pretty nice. I also tried Bvlgari Aqua and Aqua Marine, they're not really similar to each other, but each has a really nice scent. Tried Polo Blue, wasn't bad, I need to remember things have changed since I used to slather myself with that horrific, slightly nauseating Polo Green in the 70's. :) (Just my opinion of course, to paraphrase Rodney D. in Caddyshack: " Smells good on you though!" :) I was all set to like Chanel Allure Homme Sport, but I just didn't. Hey, I've cut down almost completely spending money on watches, and other things, so I still need something, right? And it's hard to spend a fortune on this stuff, unless you buy all of the Creed scents. :) And, smelliness is next to godliness. :) |

Your to funny man. You became a fragrance afficionado really quickly. I learned today that if you use fragrances that you should not shower with a shower gel like axe or old spice as it will effect the longevity of the scent. You are supposivley supposed to just use a regular non scented body wash unless its a body wash that came with the fragrance. |

Haha too funny! Please dont become a basenotes idiot omg they're so ridiculous! "This scent has a oakey must too it with what seems to be a hint of some 1963 Cognac I believe. Then it shifts to a fresh grilled pepper scent with some lemon ranch dressing and potato skin. During the finish you get a nice leathery tang damp grass peach kind smell with a hint of mushrooms and french toast with butter with the crust taken off" hahaha |
