Pretty easy explanation if you ask me ?

I read this in the local newspaper this morning. His friends, including an Air Force major general with 20,000 hours, can't believe it, but everybody makes mistakes. Most don't lead to death, but Odegaard was not immune to human error.

Hopefully you can see the pic since I swiped it from an FAA site.

The things we do when we are young and dumb. Years ago i flew part 135 in WA state across the cascade mountains in small planes. When there was icing we would get a "cruise clearence" and start climbing. By the time we had enough ice we couldn't maintain altitude any more we were on the other side of the mountains and could descend. I only had to turn back a few times.

No way in hell I would that now. That picture reminded me of it. One trick we had was to blast the cabin heat. It blew on the lower part of the windscreen. You would end up with a 3"x5" hole in the ice you could see through to land.

Reading this I start to sweat . . . but I did crazy things myself when I was a younger rookie pilot . . .

Holy crap! That's crazy. Well, you know that. We never issue cruise clearances anymore. Most pilots seem to be unaware of what they are and what you can do if issued one.

And this pilot was indeed disoriented. I talked him out of 2 "death spirals." This incident made the local news and the pilot was interviewed. He said he was fine and could have made it on his own. But that it was easier with my help. I too am a pilot and took that as a slap in the face.

He was dead without your help. He's an ass for not acknowledging it.

I'll buy you a beer that should be from him if I ever meet you.

Sounds like a "young bold" pilot to me. I can't count how many times ATC had my back. Thank you for all you do.

Thanks guys. I appreciate that. I did my best with a crap situation and have gotten a few pats on the back within the ATC community. We help pilots, they help us, life is good

That'll make the crew work a bit. Cool video. Tegucigalpa and St Maarten are a couple other airports I like watching landing videos. I'm lame. I know it but its better than cat videos.

Landing at the old airport in Hong Kong felt like that as a passenger, only with a death dive as the pilot turned right.

I thought it was a cart shift too. I read an account of a loadmaster who watched the vid yesterday and he said it looked exactly like that's just what happened.

Look how he wallows and then flattens out. I'm sure as he the cg shifted that was the best aoa he could manage.

I bet you that they where working until the last second. . .

Cargo shift is possible but maybe a trim runaway . . .

"Gerry Beck crashed his Mustang in 2007. "

The Gerry Beck accident happened directly in front of the president of our flying club and myself. Had to think long and hard about whether to return to Oshkosh the following year.

Saw this today at work. I'm not positive, but I believe it's the last B-29 still flying. Sorry about the pic quality, but still I thought it was cool.

Yep, that's Fifi, the last B29. It will be at Oshkosh air show next week and so will I.
