You're right though, in the right light and with just the right angle I can see it really well.

Laser etching is a fairly new thing and older Rolex watches will not have it.

You are correct. From what I understand it started appearing in 1999-2000.

I could easily see it on my 16600 SD. Then it went for service where they replaced the crystal because of a chip around the edge. Now there is no crown in the new crystal. If it's there, I sure can't see it.

Visit your friendly neighborhood watchmaker and borrow a loupe. Better yet buy one. 10x -20x magnification would be fine.

You'd be amaze on what else you can see under these magnifications!

I don't remember when the LECs started, but a Rolex can be authentic without the LEC.

Also, there have been instances reported for dateless models where the LEC is not at 6:00.
