With those distributions, it might be reasonable to assume every AD can satisify the first buyer, perhaps one-of-five the second, and one-in-ten (optimistically) the third.

So, by the end of the month, across the ten ADs (if hit in the worst order), just from these three people, you've had:
  • One customer for the easy DJ
  • Five for the hard DJ
  • Ten for the Sub

That doesn't make the Sub more popular, just harder to find. It could be both more popular and harder to find, but you don't know that from the data you have.
The point of my post is that in my world not enough ppl are giving the Datejust a chance, and it's far more common to see Subs/GMTs/Seadwellers/Daytonas on the wrists than new/current Datejusts. I hardly wear my SS professional watches nowadays because everybody has one. It's like going out and a large proportion of people are wearing the same shirt as I am. At least that's in my part of the world. It might be hard for you to imagine, but when I wear my DJ41 out I am actually a minority, and it actually makes me feel special! Like I'm wearing something more exclusive than everyone else.

Nothing wrong with that. I really like the DateJust, but the Sub is in a different league (IMHO).

A Datejust was my first Rolex purchase and it had nothing to do with availability. Professional models were very available at that time (about 5 years ago) but I had always wanted a Rolex and when I thought of Rolex, the Datejust is what came to mind. I didn't get into sport models until much later.

I love the sport models and own a SD, but for me the DJ will always be the model I most closely associate with Rolex. I'm sure many other share my opinion.

But now that I have both, it's not really a contest for me as to which I prefer. I think the OP is right to point out, too, that the DJ is much more of a sport watch than it's often given credit for. I'm seriously considering selling my Sub and picking up one of the new 36mm DJs that were just announced at Baselword.
This is so true. You'd really have to own both to really know. I, like you, don't need or want to wear my Subs anymore. I just keep them for collection. And I find that such an irony.

The DJ is selling to the Rolex buyers outside these walls. It’s incredibly popular and has extremely high profile. To many, the DJ IS the icon of Rolex. Even Rolex views this.
Last year and this year at upscale Disney Resorts my casual watch spotting had the DJ as the most worn Rolex without question.

My DJ2 could easily be my one and only.

I think the DJ41 blue dial is beautiful. If people could get away from internet and social media hype, I could easily get real happy with only this one.

Because Subs are awesome!!! Nothing against DJ's but prefer Subs. Actually prefer Subs over any watch at any price.

concerning the two distinct model watches, it is merely a matter of personal preference. Although I would not sell my Explorer, it happens my favorite watch (not in the original posting to compare but it is only relevant because I don't wear a DJ). At the same time, I also like to wear a dive watch. However, with respect to diving I have never gone below 30m. The Submariner has the rotating bezel and I enjoying having it and using it, l love the convenience of the glidelock and most importantly the Submariner's style suits me well. And of course the Explorer's style suits me more than the any DJ ever could.

Simple answer. Yes. You will regret settling for the DJ if you really want a sub. To
me it’s worth the extra effort and expense to get the sub. I prefer sport watches.

Why go through trouble and expense of getting Sub (v. DJ)?

You do know that a DJ (at least in the 41 size) more often than not costs more than a Sub, right?

To many outside of WIS, DJ is Rolex. And DJ is what Rolex pushing to the mass. If you're into DJ, there are seas of them you can buy at ADs with discount and no rationing, there're many variations you can choose from. If you want a hop-up DJ, then the DD is there for you...your AD sale associate will be in love with you not kicking you away like when you're asking for Sub

I never knew he wore a Seiko Golden Tuna Professional, it's such a cool watch!

I own both. 2 different watches. Got the sub date and a 2 tone gold dj41.
The sub has more versatility in my opinion. I got the sub first and the dj41 as a more dressy watch option. Love both watches but the sub is just special. That’s just my opinion tho.

If you want perfection, get a 5 digit Sub, and a DJ36ss.

Datejust is VERY popular in Asia where most of the watches produced by the Swiss watch industry are sold.

Date just and date just 41 have the 3235. Subc has 3135 with parachrom hairspring.

I bought a dj41 from ad oyster and smooth, rhodium dial to make up for the fact that I couldn’t get a sub from the AD. Regretted it almost immediately. Luckily since then I got a subc from a different AD (no bundles no history etc) since the sub I haven’t even looked at the DJ41 (except with remorse for my impatience) yeah the DJ41 is nice and all but it’s nothing remotely like a sub, perhaps similar to an explorer, then again it’s not an explorer. To me each model is specifically different, to others an air king is an explorer. I personally did what you’re thinking and regretted it. I paid exactly $2000aud more for the sub. Dj41 was $9300 at the time, then the prices in aus went up, I paid $113000 for the Sub. Both retail at respective times. The submariner so completely different and to me it leaves me in awe when I look at (when I’m not busy in which case I just check the time) oh by the way, the bezel, case and all polished centre links scratch when you touch it (if there’s a piece of dirt it will drag) and I am not kidding. Long sleeves scratch the case and bezel. More than hairline scratches too (to my eyes, but some would consider them hairlines I guess)

Don’t be impatient and don’t settle. They are such different watches.

Snap, I forgot that, gotta admit dj 41 feels like you’re not wearing a watch. Where the sub is 2nd to that (extremely comfortable)

Now am ripped with a date just sitting in a cabinet, on my life my mrs doesn’t even want it, and I wouldn’t go through the hassle of selling the Dj myself and wouldnt pay a shop commission to sell it. I am not rich but I don’t stress about losses like that. I am stoked I have a sub date and perhaps in 40 years I’ll enjoy the dj41, although it will suck to have to get it serviced in between...

Oh I just saw what you highlighted, I live in Australia mate and the retail for 116610LN is exactly $11300 AUSTRALIAN DOLLARS. I am 100% sure I wasn’t ripped on price, as that’s the price on the Rolex site, and what I paid at the AD. The price $8550usd converts to $12228. So in that sense I got a good price ;)

I have the opposite experience. I bought a DJ41 smooth jubilee and also had a chance to buy a SubC, but I’ve been wearing the Datejust practically everyday and I haven’t even looked at the Sub for months. I just find the Sub too common a look, whereas the DJ41 is just beautiful and brings a smile to my face every time I look at it to check the time.

Definitely each to their own! Gotta say the date just is perfectly comfortable and the sub is nearly perfectly comfortable. Congrats to us for the watches we both own!!! ;)

I have both, a 16800 and a DJ36. When I bought my Sub in 1985, I was very active in scuba diving, sailboat racing, surfing, fishing, etc. I used the sub for it's intended purpose. I was given the DJ36 by a "brother in arms" as his health had declined.

To this day, I prefer the DJ. The sub is larger, heavier, and no where near as comfortable as the DJ. I admire the Sub, but for everyday ware, it is the DJ. In the time period I bought the sub. Two tone DJ were very popular, and unless someone really utilized the functions of the Sub, the TTDJ was the most popular. GMT's were on a popularity basis less than the Sub, but shared the utility appeal of the sub.

I believe that in the current market, watches are not purchased for their intended use, but for fashion or style. Still I recommend the DJ if you need a very capable watch, or the Sub if you are active in water sports.
