SD43 Mark I dial officially discontinued!

A. We're already seeing value difference.

B. Personally, If I have the option for both watches, same price and you tell me one was produced for a year. The other more than a year and counting. I'm gonna go for the one that was produced for a shorter time period. Why? Simply to have something that's different, even though it's ever so slightly different.

So is there value? Yeah of course. I think you're mad or have some other agenda if you continue to say other wise. Again, not saying it will be the next Paul Newman, but there's no denying these small nuances affect value.

Kind of reminds me of the 16710 3186 movement. Senior members, "experts", even mods here repeatedly said there would never be a difference in value.

The same way you can't tell the future to say something will become extremely valuable, it's ridiculous to say it can't. There's no crystal ball right? So don't pretend to know either way. All we have is current evidence and opinion. Currently the price is higher for the MK1. Currently my opinion is that i'd rather have the MK1, and I'm sure it is shared with many here.

I think everyone would. Not everyone would admit to it, but given a choice people would chose a card with 2017 and not after.

I have a Mark I dated Jan 2019.

I don’t sell my watches and probably love the SD43 more than any of my others, so have no plans to sell. However if something mental happened a la the Flat 4 Kermit madness and I had to flog the watch 20 years from now, I’d bin the card and, with random serials, there would be no way of dating the watch, so the card is irrelevant in this scenario.

I must admit I have dog in the fight since my watch is from 2017(with a card)lol.

Bin, as in throw it in the bin. Do you guys not have that word? Synonymous with trash can.

I’ve removed my diver’s extension, pretty easy DIY as long as you have a steady hand and the correct hollow-ground screwdriver. Many owners on here have done the same - some find it’s more comfortable without (I found no difference in comfort) and I think it looks better without as the extension is situ makes the already very large clasp look even bigger.

I don’t know of anybody who’s removed the cyclops. It’s possible as it’s glued on but the problem is the crystal has AR coating under the cyclops only so removal would still leave a cyclops-shaped window on the crystal which would look odd. The other option would be to replace the OEM crystal with an aftermarket one, though again I don’t know of anybody that’s done that and it presents its own issues.

Removed dive extension and moved the 1/2 link to the 6 o'clock side to perfectly center the clasp. Very comfortable watch.

Agreed > Look at the Daytona debacle 'APH'. I sold mine for £20k. Doesn't have to be vintage nor does it have to be produced in small numbers. If there is a variance, then it will most often command a premium.

In terms of sheer collectability, my take is mk1 2017 (no doubt) > mk1 2018/19 (doubt) > mk2 2018/19 (no doubt) , since 2017 is the 50th anniversary year.

The SD43 Mk1 is pretty unique when you think of it as a collector: first SD with a Cyclops, first professional watch with the 3235 movement, first Rolex watch with a 43mm case (kind of quirky), only professional piece with the 3235 movement without the small coronet at 6 o'clock, only SD with I instead of 1 in the 1,220m lettering. A watch with a single year production run (hello?). These features can't be ignored in the eye of a collector looking for the little details, the quirks, the oddities, the singularities.

"Rarity" also plays a role. How many mk1s were produced, 8k? How many mk2s, 16k so far? (and more to come?)

Then in the big scheme of things, people tend to remember the first and the last. Anything in between is a blur, especially when there are many dial variations.

Full disclosure I was lucky enough to get the first SD43 received by my local AD in early May 2017.

If I had the choice today between mk1 and mk2/3/4 etc., I'd pick the mk1 as far as potential collectability is concerned. But everyone is different and free to draw his own conclusions.

The only anniversary model I've seen take off in value was that one in 2003 with that funny 4 on that certain green bezel and the oval looking O and was nick-named from a amphibian.
I dont see this Mk1 vs Mk2 taking off anywhere.

Everyone on here stating my Mk1 is a future collectable, only XXX amount you just gotta wonder if their mind is actually in here for the enjoyment or they if and thats a big IF one day 50-100 years from now it will be worth a few grand in premium.

Just crazy to be speculating on this type of nonsense on modern day watches.

After reading this thread I decided to buy a 2017 MK1 tomorrow for $500 less than BNIB 2019 MK2 which I almost bought. Will wear it for 5 years and then we’ll see whether this was the right decision.
