I wouldn’t go that far but will say that in New York you can get an excellent example of most cuisine in the world and it’s all here in a relatively small space.

One style of food that is not readily available is Cajun (New Orleans) food... you just have to fly to Louisiana to get that.

While true, your points are a bit irrelevant.

New York doesn’t purport to be the epicenter of regional American food. Nobody says I go to New York for Texas BBQ or Boston Clam Chowder.

Yes you do have to live here, for a long time, to know what’s good versus what’s said to be good.

I love NY but you guys are over selling it lol

The best of every cuisine from around the world. I think not. But if you want to visit a city in the United States and have a diverse offering of quality eats I agree NY is the place to be.

Couldn’t agree more. And I love NYC as well, though I’m probably not cutout to actually ever live there.

Maybe we should stick to topics less “controversial”, like iPhone vs Android or cyclops vs non-cyclops.

My wife is from upstate, she’s been down here with me since 2002 and works for the city. She’s now 40 and has been here almost as long as she’s been upstate.

Yet, there isn’t a darn thing about her that’s New York City. (Whether that’s a bad thing, or a good thing, well, that’s debatable)

Sorry brother. You’re one of us or one of them.

Again, I don’t think anyone says:

“Tibetan Food in Queens is better than Tibet”

Although I have met several Italian tourists that say:

“NYC Pizza is better than Italy”

(Don’t attack me, I don’t agree. If I wanted to anger people about pizza I’d say the best Long Island Pizza shops are better than the best Brooklyn Pizza shops. Yeah that’s right. BK pizza is second to LI. Bring it on!!!!!)

I’ll be in the city this weekend and steakhouse is not on my menu. I have Surfish Peruvian cuisine in Brooklyn and Spring Naturals in Soho on my dining list, other meals will be spontaneous. New York has so many good choices.

Spumoni to me (get ready) is like Dominos.

Any other of those has to be purchased by the pie, brick oven, sit down, I feel, should be left to the hipsters. (No hitting in the face ok?)

I honestly can’t remember the names of the by the slice BK greats, it’s been so long.

I’m not sending you out to LI, but at the very least, hit up New Park Pizza on Cross Bay. You’ll eat a whole pie, I promise.

This wouldn't be a NYC thread without a solid amount of disagreement!

On PL - it's great. The best? Depends. In the right mood and with the right people, even the worst place can be amazing. Sometimes that makes all the difference. Of course it is a solid steakhouse nonetheless, and if you factor in the history and the tradition of the place - which you must - is outstanding.

Keens is as well, and Quality Meats nowadays is the best in Midtown (and I go to Del Frisco's pretty much every week). It's not the "steakhouse ambient" though. Sometimes people want that.

On pizza - depends where you live. I'm from the Upper West Side. Plenty of option and at the end of the day you go where you feel at home and the delivery is quick, right? I usually go to Francesco's here, but have tried at least 30 different spots just in the neighborhood. If I wanted great pizza though, I'd go to Emilys (Clinton Hill), Di Fara or John's of Bleecker. Don't like lines though, so I save those for when I'm with out of towners...

Agree on all counts.
Some people have said they can make a better steak on their own, and maybe they can. But when I go out I want the full experience and you can’t do that at home. Different strokes.
I had a great experience at Keens two years ago. Steaks were excellent.
I went to Benjamin’s last year and, although the steak was very good, the atmosphere and vibe weren’t great. YMMV.
Quality Meats was really excellent, but as someone said, you’re practically rubbing elbows with the table next to you. It’s also not the traditional steakhouse vibe, but it’s very nice.
I’m going to look up Francesco’s next trip. I stay on Central Park South so I’m sure I can walk there for a slice.

Ha. I grew up in Rockland county NY. Exit 6W off the Palisades. 20 minutes out of the GW Bridge.

When I would tell people, they would respond, “oh, you live update”. I suppose it is somewhat. But my father in law is in Plattsburgh. Big difference.

And fwiw, I agree with the New Yorkers here. Some folks just don’t know what they don’t know.

BUT, best food ever is actually in Jersey. Just sayin....

Best Pizza is a great slice shop in Brooklyn. Lucali for a whole pie. But the best Pizza town in America is New Haven.

I tried the PL in NYC for the first time. I don’t think its anything special. Buy your self a casket iron pan and it could be pretty similar. Just my opinion.
