The seller then went on to post in this thread a hypothetical in which someone approaches him with an older, somewhat beat up watch (but one that was quite valuable) and wanted to trade him for a new (less valuable) one. He asked me what I would do, after stating that he would see nothing wrong with doing the trade. My view was that one should tell the person about the value of the watch and then steer him or her to where to sell it and get the funds to buy the new or newer Rolex he or she wants.

That example (as does the original transaction) appears to me to portray a view that it is OK to take advantage of someone's ignorance concerning what can be a very large disparity in value, and I don't agree with that.

Doesn't matter that the person in the trade that opened this thread was a pawnbroker. Who you deal with should not determine standards in how you conduct business.

I have no position on what constitutes a fair profit. As the seller correctly observed, I am not a watch dealer. My point is about disclosure.

Just my opinion. As stated over and over.

It seems to escape you the pawnbroker is a professional, and that the business he did with the OP was basically what the pawnbroker does for a living. But in your curious world, the pawnbroker is the little old lady being ripped off by a conniving AD.

As for the whole thing about the "$30,000 watch", you would do well to read post #122.

2. Certain posters, like rolexsubdate, have basically called the OP a thief, liar and cheat.
On #1, my reference to an AD was in response to another poster who asked me if the transaction in question was like a AD charging more than a Rolex was actually worth. My response was (if one wanted to use an experience with an AD) that the correct analogy would be the one I gave. That does not mean that I think the two are equivalent, but rather that the matter has to do with disclosure about what one is selling, not with making a profit in selling something. And I think one should disclose the truth about the merchandise one is selling no matter who one is dealing with, especially when there is evidence that the other party might be operating under the impression that the item in question is much, much more valuable than it really is.

The point in post #122 is a good one. But it is speculation. If the seller had said, "Well No, it did not cost anything like that", and the deal had gone through, there would be no need to speculate on what the buyer thought when he made the remark.

With respect to #2, I have not called anyone a liar, thief, or anything else. As I have said, it is really a matter of opinion on how to conduct business. People can certainly agree to disagree, which is where we are here, obviously.

I think you did great. I have worked my way up buying, selling, and trading vintage Seiko automatics. More then once I wish I'd have kept more of them.
