JJ's Observation About the "Hulk"

According to JJ, the only Rolex model with a dial of "noble" metal (precious metal) is the Platinum YM. That is up until the "Hulk" because the dial is ''Green Gold", a gold alloy developed by Rolex.

Any thoughts about "Green Gold?"

What are champagne dials made from? I believe they are painted, but with gold in the paint, possibly the same process as the platinum YM. Does this count?

You got part of that right, my friend. Champagne dials are made of brass and then gilded over.

The Platinum dial on the SS/Pt. YM is made up of SOLID 950 Grade pure Platinum as is the ENTIRE bezel - insert as well as serrated bit.

I like the look of it, but that's what it is. Rolex trying to make up a term - ala Rolesor (sounds like cold sore)...and give it meaning in your mind.

From being in the jewelry trade, I can say that the colored golds are very interesting. They aren't very common, but they are out there. Purple, Green, Rose, Blue, are the most common. However the alloys are made to wear, so the amount of alloy is more, and the gold less.

I am curious to know what percent of the alloy is in the green gold to give it the deep rich green.

I also wonder if the markers and hands are green gold, and the dial normal.

I call B.S. as an amateur Metalsmith and Jeweler you can't make gold that's green. Not possible! Rose gold, white gold, Black Hills green gold Still looks like gold with that color tint to it. That Dial is not Gold. JMHO

Have to agree the dial surface is only a few microns thick with so called green gold, and to make the colour for the green dial.Thats a process like the minute coating of Platinum on the ceramic inserts,its done by blending yellow gold powder with quite a bit of aluminium powder.If it was all solid say 18ct gold it would have to bare a assay hallmark and would never be that very very green colour..

Sorry JJ but those post's prove my point, They all look like Gold. That dial is matched perfectly to that bezel. You can't do that with Precious Metal there are a limited range of colors and they will never look that dark. JMHO

I've just got off the Rolex website www.rolex.com and under the SPECIFICATIONS for this watch, under DIAL it says GREEN GOLD DIAL.

Now, as I've stated in my earlier post, Rolex mean business when they use the term gold and it's not a term they would use very losely.

I'm pretty sure that is GOLD, not sure about the number of Carats involved, but somehow Rolex have managed to come up with GREEN GOLD..........and you can take that to the bank.

I've known Rolex way too long to realise that they never bluff when they talk about gold - they mean it.........and, trust me, that is gold!!

Guys,....it is a green watch....

if it was any other brand then a Rolex would we even consider it....a green watch....? Give it some thought...not bashing here....but at the end of the day....it is a green watch....not something you would wear with a tux or even semi casual unless you took that color into consideration....I feel that it might be a little odd - perhaps that is a good thing....but if any other watch manufacturer marketed a green bezel / green faced timepiece what might be the general consensus...? simply curious....

How about a Ferrari ?

If it was any other brand then a Ferrari would we even consider it....a red car....? Give it some thought...not bashing here....but at the end of the day....it is a RED car....not something you would drive unless you are a fireman, or Spiderman unless you took that color into consideration

It's IMHO all about a brand and the color it choose as a "symbol", Rolex is Green, Ferrari Red, Vuitton Brown (and an horrible one), etc that said, it's you liking it or not...

I don't agree. Although I'm not that much into this matching clothes-with-watches thing, I think that watch could look great with a tux.

green is rolex color, whether we like it or not.... it shows the originality of a rolex.... some people may not appreciate it, but for some other, including me, the green just brings smile to our faces.... it works well for me in a suit with green shirt or green tie, can go both ways formal and casual, no problem at all......
It comes down to our individual taste in the end....
