Everyone that says 36mm is a ladies size and that men need 40mm+ clearly has a need to compensate for something.

Muhammad Ali wore a tiny cartier tank
Mike Tyson a DJ36
James Gandolfini DD36
Richard Gere has what I believe is a 28-31mm Datejust

Wear whatever makes you happy. In my opinion, if you have a wrist under 6,5" you shouldn't wear anything larger than 40mm (Supercase sub/gmt included). Otherwise this is what I see:

The example you gave, those wearing 36, was probably before the 41 came out.

The 40mm Submariner was available to those guys long before the DJ41 and DD40 were created. If size were truly the issue then those gentleman would have worn a 40mm Submariner and not a 36mm DJ/DD.

I think they wanted an iconic datejust and bought it. In my humble opinion, had they went to the store, today, and put on the 36 and 41, there is a chance they would pick the 41. I would say more than likely. Not that there is ANYTHING wrong with the 36, but if I were to bet, I say those example of celebs would have went for the 41.

Anyways, the point of this thread was to answer if a 41 is too big for a small wrist - and yes it is.

Just because someone with a smaller wrist wears it, doesn't make it look good. Keep in mind you have teenagers walking around wearing 56mm gold-plated DIESEL watches thinking it looks banging.

I've got a very small wrist for a man but I wear 34, 36 and 41mm watches just fine.

My advice to the OP is to go try one on in person. I'm sure you will be extremely impressed with this piece.

So now you can predict with absolute certainty what watch a group of dead celebrities would have worn if they were alive today?

With every other post of yours you are an enabler for the DJ41 you personally own.

Spot on brother. Way too many wrist shots on here with too big a watch that I literally have to bite my tongue several times a day holding back a negative comment.

Don’t even know how to respond. I said I think, “in my humble opinion”, those celebs with larger wrists would have gone for the 41. God forbid anyone likes anything else other than your 36. Don’t worry your 36 is not too small, you can stop coming here for reinsurance! Lol

My girlfriend wears a no-date Sub-C as her daily and it looks great. She's also 5'10" and has an athletic yoga body so she can pull it off.

@ Generation: I also really like the white dial DJ41 with sticks. For some reason, I am hung up on lume. It is such a cool, sporty looking watch. That said, a classic 36mm Datejust looks more beautifully balanced, to me, irrespective of the wearer. And on smaller wrists, I personally think a 36mm just looks better.

If I were you, I would actually get neither, because it sounds like a compromise either way; unless you feel more assured after trying some on.

Here is my wrist with 36mm DJ, OP, and the BB58 for comparison (if this helps any). The OP 36 wears slightly larger than the DJ due to the wider lugs.

And for the record I'm having a hard time deciding between a 36 and 39 OP - both work.

Get the DJ and the OP

It's all dependent upon wrist size, hand size, personal preference and aesthetics.

My 42mm Sky Dweller on my 7.6"/19.3cm wrist (they're also 6.0cm across) and large hands with a 10.75" finger spread.

A 36mm Datejust/Day Date looks too small on me, but that's just MY opinion.

For my taste, while I can wear a 36mm Datejust, someone with a less than 6"/15.3cm wrist should most likely not wear a 42mm Sky Dweller. For them, 36mm is very appropriate.

DJ41 is pretty much the exact same size as the BB58.

With that said, the 36 would look great on you.

I spent ages on the 36 v 41 debate and even after trying both on couldnt decide

I have a 6.2 inch wrist so quite small and in the end the dj36 call came first and the size is PERFECT, it gets the most wrist time even more than the sub. It obviously depends on your wrist but on mine it doesnt look “small” and 41 was also a good fit but slightly bulky

My thoughts for my 6.5 wrist, I could pull it off with both 36 & 41.
36 is the classic and all rounder size for the majority.
I am seeing myself wearing 36 more often than the 41 thou.

For me at 6.5in only one looks right in my eye which is the 41 (true < 40mm). What you see when you look at your wrist is the most important thing. You wear the watch and not the other way around.

I prefer the DJ and DD in 36mm for some reason I have never fully understood - even though I happily wear 40, 41 and 43mm sports watches. I just think a dress watch should be a bit smaller - think a classic Calatrava size, it is not going to be a big 41mm dial is it?

I thought the thread starter, Generation, bought a 36mm, last year? A white roman one. If he reads, I would be curious to read how he likes the watch nowadays?

DJ41 really isn’t a big watch. I think unless you have a tiny wrist, consider the 41mm.
