The problem in general is the newer watch buyers are uneducated with watches and doesn't even know what they like. Most are too scared to buy anything different from the herd. The "investment" buzz brought them to the mechanical watch world from whatever the last pop culture fad was.
Its sad and we see it here all the time. Know what your personal style is and what your lifestyle is before even thinking about purchasing a luxury watch. Put in the work and do the homework on the brands and models. The days before the internet we had to work and drive around a lot just to get basic specs. Now everything is spoon fed via wifi and the kids are not educated enough to even interpret this mass amount of free data and still sit back and ask what watch I should buy?? Watches are not investments and if you NEED them to be, you cant afford a luxury watch in your current economical status.

Interesting topic. I picked up a Date model ref 1500 in the late 90's only because it cost me a few hundred dollars. I wore it in regular rotation but got bored of it within a couple of years, put it in a drawer and sold it several years ago. I've never had as great love for Rolex but always appreciated their R&D, history and nonstop advertising. After over twenty years in the industry, I've finally come to appreciate and become interested enough in the brand to buy a Rolex (Sub41 at retail) for the first time since I've been collecting. I would doubt that I'd buy myself another for the next couple of decades but I never get bored of learning new things about the brand. As far as if I'll get bored of the watches, time will tell...maybe if they produce a chrono without screw down pushers, I'll jump in.

Like the AK47 in the watch world, the Rolex is a tough tool, very well known, ubiquitous, and deadly sexy in the right hands ;)

Rolex does eventually fall into a majority category where you may not feel very unique so I can understand where you are coming from, but to each his own
Rolls Royce = Rolls-Royce (hyphen)
Mercedez = Mercedes

Disagree Omega = Volkswagen. More like Audi.

Very accurate that Rolex = Mercedes. I know people that work in retail sales that drive a Mercedes. As my cousin once said about Rolex: You see dogs now wearing them.

A number of years ago the saying was:

Rolex is for new money and Patek is for old money.

Variety truly is the spice of life. I have many Rolexes but would NEVER settle for only buying that brand. There are WAY too many other interesting brands out there to share my attention and admiration.

Well, I am not bored with the brand and watches themselves.

But I can only spend so much looking at watches that I can't buy. I can afford the MSRP, but not crazy enough to spend the premium.

Anyway, I see them, like them, but I lost interest in owning the new ones.

I'm not bored. I think that with everything that's happened in the world this year, I am less interested in making watch purchases.

I still like to look and wear the ones I have and talk about watches. However, right now I'm not actively seeking anything.

I love the car comparison threads (and random posts) but I feel like Rolex aligns with Porsche as both have passionate collectors, history, value retention, etc. I do see the Mercedes comparison as wel (status symbol, wide range of entry to high end, etc.), l but I am not familiar with any VC collectors. I do know tons of Porsche / Rolex collectors though.

This list is so wrong. No way Journe is 28 and Omega is 5. Zenith below TAG, ludicrous. Junghans > Tissot, etc. I hope nobody bases their purchase off this BS "luxury" list.

The list completely loses credibility when they list "Vincero" at #20, and above FPJ,

Looks like they forgot to include MVMT and Daniel Wellington on the list!

I was were you are now. Frustrated with the dealer games and impossible acquisitions. Fortunately I have found the one brand that re-ignited the flame ...... Grand Seiko.. this brand has been my focus over the past year and it has helped me maintain my love of horology.

I’ve seen others on the forum ask “but are you having fun?” The truth is that it was fun for a long time, but it recently stopped being fun. The idea of continuing to spend time, energy and money on dealer relationships is not appealing anymore. I would still like to get a white face Daytona and brand new Patek nautilus, but I already own a gold Daytona and a vintage nautilus. The amount of BS I would need to go through to get the other 2 watches makes me not even want them anymore. Anyway, I’m just tired even thinking about buying watches. I have more than what I need and I’m just going to enjoy what I have unless I sprout 12 more arms or something.
I could not agree less.

Yeah, ranking is pointless when it doesn't say what it's based on. Sales? Profits? Reputation? Editor's favorites? Durability after being dropped from six feet?

Should the publication now rank its favorite colors, too?

There still has to be demand in excess of supply. You can't just make 20 of something and expect people to care that it's rare. They want the Rolex because it's actually great.

No doubt Rolex makes a good watch. For a company that supposedly produces a million watches per year it does seem strange they don’t allocate more of their internal resources to satisfying the hunger of the general consumer. I believe this is what we are referring to as artificial restrictions of supply.

it is definitely getting very annoying. Seeing the endless posts of people posting about buying up their collection in a few months consisting of a hulk, pepsi/batman, and ceramic daytona asking about investment value etc is truly ruining it for me. Been on the waiting list for a Pepsi since they came out and constantly given the run around. The first watch i want to buy brand new i cant even get because i dont spend enough money in the store. About ready to keep my few 5 digits and find another hobby.

The idea of the wait list is absolute BS. Before I got my my BLNR I went back to the store in Vancouver (Palladio) where I bought 3 rolexes from. 2 Ladies DJ and a sub c LN. I had my name on a supposed list and a friend of mine got the BLNR before I did even though he was shopping for it after. So much for the list. No harm though as a really good friend of mine sourced it back east.

The dealers and stores are milking it for what’s it’s worth with their bundles and making people buy jewellery is their new sales tactic. Am I bitter about this? No, I get it’s part of their game. I’m just not willing to play this game with them and I encourage other consumers to just avoid dealers who engage or encourage this. Ultimately in retail we all vote with our dollars. My money is better spent elsewhere. But I absolutely don’t blame you for wanting to find a new hobby or watch brand to deal with.
