It's interesting to try to guess which members might be on the spectrum by their posts.

Great thread!

Avoiding credit card merchant fees. No AD gives free links, at least in my +30 years buying watches I’ve never seen it.

Kinda late to the party but I'm with the camp that believes extra links are not free. They may choose to give them to you as a courtesy, or they may not. That's their call. I've bought watches from various boutiques and gotten a free extra strap etc... If a customer walks in for a strap its not free, and they could have made me pay for it as well, but since I bought a watch they gave it away as a gift/courtesy.

Regarding the outer box sleeve maybe they ran out as the watches and the packaging come separately. Who knows. Not a big deal at all.

Regarding the cheque vs the CC you voluntarily went and got the cheque... Nobody made you do anything. If it was a big deal to you, you should have just said no thanks.

A lot of restaurants have a sign that says the reserve the right to refuse service. They dont have to sell you anything, nor do you have to buy anything from them.

Could they have been more courteous or accommodating? Yeah sure... Are they obliged to take credit cards and give out free links? Nah...

I get preferring a payment that avoids CC fees. I like wiring the money, which I recently did for purchase from Tourneau. Went smoothly, no problems.

The part I don't agree with, and it seems to be echoed in this thread, is the extra link. I don't believe the AD or Rolex should be on the hook to provide you more metal for free.

I don't understand the CC issue though. I always purchase using a credit card, as it adds to my watch's warranty, provides peace of mind in the albeit incredibly slim chance the watch was not authentic, and, gets my rewards points (2X points with an Amex Bonvoy card).

Also, a bad online review really should be a last resort, as it's sure to destroy whatever relationship you have with that AD. I think having a closed door or over the phone conversation would've been the better choice.

Fascinating discussion. I disagree with the OP's tactics (mainly the online review) but to each his own.

I don't believe the the AD should provide extra links at no cost but, let's be honest, only providing a bracelet big enough to fit a 7.7" wrist is a bit antiquated.

The average man and woman are much bigger than even 50 years ago. I have a 7.5" wrist and am 6' 175, not a very big guy, and I do not have to take out a link on a jubilee and only one link on an oyster.

Maybe at Rolex prices they can provide enough links to fit an 8" wrist at MSRP.

Perhaps Rolex is basing their standard bracelet sizes on European wrists.

i support OP. demanding extra $$ for links is cutting corners and wholly unnecessary; should be extended as a common courtesy. do you folks like paying extra for front and rear carpeting when purchasing a new vehicle??

You are asking for something no one gets.
If anything, you might get a bad review.
This isn’t a sympathetic crowd.

This must be your first Rolex purchase. ADs are akin to the “Soup Nazi” in Seinfield. If they ask for a bank check, wire, cash, or blood plasma, you hand it over and step to the right.

One time in Paris, and I bought a new gold watch needed a small extra link, (i had put on some pounds, (since I have lost them all 😉) …this was at dPlace Vendôme, at a very fine boutique. The salesperson told me she thought lit would add about 400 euros, I said to please go ahead. This was about 6/7 years ago.

Once it came back to be fitted that day, the sales person mentioned mentioned that the Manager of the store said the link would be gratis. I replied that that was very nice of him to do offer it. She responded: He knows you will buy from us again, and you had selected a great beautiful timepiece and he wanted me to have the watch fitted perfectly for me at no extra cost.

Classy…I didn’t ask for a courtesy no charge on link. The price of the watch was already of high value, I didn’t ask for a discount on the watch.

I sent them a thank you note the next day.

After that, I have been back to the boutique, as predicted by the manager.

Unfortunately in this country, we pay a ton for our own healthcare because of the obesity epidemic. Now We have to pay for their Rolex links.

Your remark is so asinine on so many levels...even for you, it's beyond stupid.
