I was just reading an interesting article in The Spectator about alcohol consumption.

https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/...bout-drinking/

Excerpt:

"In 1979, the [UK] government advised men to drink no more than 56 units of alcohol a week. This was later reduced to 36 units, then 28 units and then 21 units. Last month, the Chief Medical Officer reduced it once again, this time to 14 units. Upon announcing this, she also asserted that there is no safe level of drinking and that the health benefits of moderate alcohol consumption were ‘an old wives tale’.

"Male drinking guidelines vary enormously around the world, from 52 units a week in Fiji to 35 units in Spain, all the way down to seven units in Guyana. There is no other country in the world that has the same guidelines as the UK."

Still doing the same thing here, a glass or two of wine with dinner every night.

On the weekends we have two martinis a day and a bottle of wine with dinner.

For us more than anything, alcohol is part of the food experience, so I can't imagine enjoying a great meal without wine.

The martinis are just for fun I guess

I have alot of respect for anyone who chooses not to drink. My parents are abstainers being of the mennonite faith. My brother is an alcoholic and has been drink free for 11 years now.

Thank you.

Still feels a little surreal when I reflect upon my drinking days. So glad to be past that chapter at this point though.

I always found the statistics interesting.

The US also recommends a max of 14 drinks per week as well, so its not the only country with those statistics pushed on the public, I'm not sure of the scientific validity or if that J bend graph is an excellent representation of the facts or not. But I imagine there's some truth to moderate alcohol use decreasing the mortality rate to a point.

Definitely interesting to read that abstinence is really no safer than moderate drinking though. Iirc there is evidence pointing to alcohol increasing the risk of heart disease with even the most moderate alcohol consumption. But apparently not enough to outweigh the positive benefits.

It would also depend on what type of alcohol, of course. Red wine and its antioxidants, etc, is obviously going to do you more good than cheap vodka.

True, I remember reading this article on Italian Centenarians years back and they claimed a bit of wine daily was the answer. (Along with hard work and fresh food)

Yes, Cannonau red wine from Sardinia, where that lady is from, is supposed to be particularly healthy is certain regards.

Used to be 2 to 3 glasses of whisky in some form (scotch, bourbon, Japanese whisky, etc) per day.

Now i'll have maybe 2 to 3 drinks per month.

Why do you keep including pictures of male models in all your posts.

For me I don’t have any issues with drinking so basically I’d don’t really monitor it either. At times in my life I drank every night and at other times maybe once a week but in all cases circumstances dictated how much .

I’ve cut back substantially this year. For now anyways. Abstained completely for a couple months and last two months I’ve been averaging 6-8 drinks total per week. I normally drink 16 oz of 5% pilsner. Usually 2 nights with 2-3 drinks each sometimes a third gets thrown in if we go out to eat mid week.

Still a lot by many accounts but I’ve gone long stretches where id drink 3-4 a day and double that on weekends so this is a marked improvement for me. I’ve managed to avoid heavy drinking sessions altogether which is great as well as non social drinking which was a problem for me. I’d drink while cooking and eating dinner mostly.

I'm in my mid 40s. I was a heavy drinker in college through my 30s. I quit due to the hangovers lasting 2-3 days. I'm over drinking and haven't felt better!

I partied quite a bit in college, and in to flight school, but shortly after starting flight school I quit. I can’t even give a reason why… I just did. I have been drunk one time since then, my 40th birthday. Oh I can’t say I never drink, I do enjoy the odd Baily’s or Kahula, but that’s about it.

I was the most popular guy in my squadron. Every night the guys are like: “Come on Paul, we’re going out tonight” Me: “No, i think I’m staying in tonight”

“No no…. Come on buddy” (Dragging me out).

Being the designated driver made me extremely popular.
