I'm now a member of the darkside....

So my previous 'should I trade my SD4000 for a Pam' thread has come to a conclusion.

I went for the 312!

I decided that the 312 was worth the extra cash even through I'm not wild about the 1950's case. The salesman reluctantly got the watch out of the safe for one final inspection and then...

What's that?

The date window isn't cut out properly and there's a small bit of white backing showing. That would drive me mental.

On to the date itself.....it wasn't quite centred properly. This happens occasionally on my old 80's Datejust. A quick revolution to the next number should resolve that......

Except it just moved the next number to a slightly different positon, then the next number to a different position again.

Not what I expected from an $8,300 watch with hyped up in-house movement.

The saleman agreed that there was something not quite right and agreed to do....absolutely nothing. Couldn't care less. Didn't offer to send it to the service centre if I bought it. Nada. Yeah. It's not right. They're very rare. Do you want it or not?

I left the store and walked down the road to the other AD and promtly purchased a 112 from their knowledgeable and friendly staff instead.

Saved a bundle and couldn't be happier.

In-house? More like a brick outhouse. I'll probably pick up a 312 once any bugs have been ironed out.

The 112 is a great choice.

Passing on the 312 would have been difficult.

I am surprised by the attitude to the 312 problems.

Which AD was it? Can you tell me?

This thread is useless without pix.

Happy to name and shame!

The Hour Glass in Sydney. They've now lost a total of $15,500 in sales from their poor customer service in the last year or so. I won't be going back, even if my life depended on it.

Happily Nicole at J.Farren-Price was professional, courteous and had a very thorough knowledge of the product. At just shy of A$6,000 this isn't a cheap watch and yet The Hour Glass treats me as if I'm returning a dented tin of beans.

I now need a really thick 'army' style strap.

This is the first I've heard of issues with the 312. I suppose no one or nothing is perfect.

Congratulations on the 112 though! Let's see some photos soon

My 312 has no issues... Sorry you were presented a busted one by a crappy dealer. I wouldn't take that lying down and contac the manager and Panerai. We should all be getting great service for the luxury items we purchase.

Keep in mind that nothing is absolutely perfect. I've had experience with 2 of 3 omega planet oceans with a broken movement and these are mass produced pieces. You should expect a hand made piece to have some flaws.

Expect... But not accept. That's the key. Your dealer shouldve offered to send it in.

My first thought exactly. Contact Panerai first by e-mail, then wait a day and forward the message to the dealer. Be polite of course, but leave no question regarding your disgust at witnessing the Panerai brand so poorly represented. That'll get some action quickly.

So far I'm loving it.

I've got some straps winging their way to me from Panatime and I'll post some photos as soon as they arrive.

The watch is going to be worn as a beater and will be treated as a military watch should be. I've already got my first major ding! Here's to many more.

I'll be posting a hideously biased review in the main reviews sub-forum shortly.
