Recent AD experience

I don't know why I go back to Image's Jewelers to look at the Rolex, but I do. I was in Elkhart visiting my watch in the bank when I decided to go to the AD since its within a couple of miles. I was looking in their showcase and talking with the smug salesman when I asked if they were getting a Deep Sea in any time soon. He said "We have one but its in the safe". I asked why they don't keep it in the showcase and he replied...."Rolex told us that we should keep the high end watches in the safe and its not acceptable to allow customers to handle them." Is this true? I showed interest in the watch and would think they would want to show any customer the watch that asked about it specifically.

Me too. Just last week I had one on at a local AD. I didn't turn and run or anything.

Maybe they are still under the impression that the Deepsea is the "new Daytona", as the local AD told me last year.

As much as I hate it I've started to make sure I am wearing a watch of equal or greater value than the model I'm interested in when going to an AD to look. At least then they will pay attention to me.

As we picked up a new DJ earlier in the week the AD had my wife try on a Leopard Daytona (yuck) and I tried on a DeepSea, a gold GMT, a President...They must have pulled out and had us try on 15 different watches.

If they thought they had the opportunity to unload that Leopard, I'm surprised they didn't let you try on 4 watches on one wrist and dance around the store.

That's odd. In terms of price, many ADs put even more expensive ones in the case. If it's not acceptable to allow customers to handle them, how would customers make a decision?

I think "the smug salesman" explains it all.

This is the same AD that refused to send my watch to NY after I told them NYC RCS told me to send it to them. I was giving them the benifit of the doubt since I found out from one of the owners that the guy that refused to send my watch in was having "mental and emotional issues" at the time (I called and complained). This was not the same person that helped me the other day. I will never go back to that AD, EVER.

If you wanted the watch, just ask for another salesman and buy the watch from him while the prior salesman watch. I am sure he will learn in the future to "not judge a book by it's cover".

I don't know what I want. I want to see what the new Sub is all about. I have hopes it will have a retro look like a Sub of old, maybe with a big crown. I also think it might look like the Deep Sea only sleeker (not as thick) and without a helium valve. Who knows but I think I want to wait for something to "WoW" me, ya know. Regardless of whether or not I was going to buy the watch, I should have been offered a chance to look at it. It just might have "wow'ed" me that day.

I was at a big retailer AD in Dallas recently just talking to the salesperson about the new DJII and the Deepsea. I asked her in passing about the stainless daytonas and she went into this schpeil about I had to be on a preferred list and start purchasing watches and/or jewelry to get on the list. I told her that my wife's Raymod Weil Diamond watch was purchased at her store....she then looked at me funny and said "well thats at least a start". I looked at her, looked at my wife, smiled and left. I hate the attitude of some of the people at these AD's. I don't get the sense of entitlement they have sometimes, and this does not go for every AD, but in my experience many of them are smug, struggling salespeople who hate their jobs.

If anyone in the Dallas/Plano area have a good experience with an AD let me know who it is.

I can understand 500 ppl will want to handle the watch but maybe 1 will buy so in respect to the paying customers, they want to limit the watch being handled too many times. I would definitely take my business elsewhere as there are plenty other AD salesmen who will give you better service.

When I bought my DSSD in March it was sitting in the display case. The AD never mentioned keeping any watch (save for maybe a Daytona) in the safe. And while I believe some AD's might think it makes the watch more exotic to have it hidden away, I also think that is the wrong way to go about selling a watch. But then again I'm not an AD...

I went to another AD about an hour away a couple months ago. He had an excellent selection in the showcase including a DSSD. He allowed me to see it. When he handed it to me, I asked to use his Rolex cloth and then picked it up with the cloth out of courtesy. Perhaps they should request that you wear gloves?

I have seen at least 1 DS in every AD that I had visited in the last 3 month.
I don't think ADs are hiding them.

Any AD make that kind of comment "not allowing customers to handle them" is obnoxious.
Whoever that person was was looking down on the potential customer as "you're not worthy".
There are many good AD's elsewhere.

I tried one on in St. Thomas, Beverly Hills, and locally here in Maine - no problems.

I would say 100% NOT true. Everytime I go into my local AD here in Madison, they pull the white gold Daytona and President out of the case for me. I dont even ask and they insist it is time for me to get away from the SS models...try something new. I would find a new AD

Ha ha that sounds smug to me. My ad saw me walking in the mall and called me over to look and try on a rose gold daytona and the most I have bought in the past is a sub lv and an air-king from them.

Bad salesmanship!!!!
Bad for business!!!

Seen it tried at three different ADs. No problem!!

My advice: If they don't want to do business with you take your business somewhere else!!! It is their loss!!

I also have been to this AD and have been told that if I am buying it they will get it out of the safe. The salesman added that ROLEX DSSD buyers don't like for anyone to touch them before they are bought.

HUH? I thought at the time he must be kidding. He then proceeded to pull out and let me try on numerous ROLEXES, some of which were 18k without even a blink???

The economy in this whole region is miserable and I find this behavior troubling to say the least.

As others have said I will take my business elsewhere, it is my gain and their loss.

This policy does not make sense to me either, but I can aver that this situation is correct as stated in the OP.

I'd have gone and gotten her one of those cheesy wall calendars that has baby turtles or ducks on it or something and reminded her that it's not 2006 anymore, and the "preferred list" should include anyone who has cash in hand and hasn't filed for unemployment or bankruptcy.

I make it a hobby sometimes to visit various AD's in different cities or States and ask about SS Daytonas. There responses are very humorous. Some will even smile and walk away. Others come up with every story you can think of. It's amazing!

I just purchased a DSSD last weekend.
Called first and asked if they were an authorized dealer and for Omega as my PO needed some adjustment. Asked (over the phone), do you carry the Rolex Deepsea?. Was put on hold. 2 minutes later she said, yes we do and we have one. Got to the store, handed them my PO and asked for the Deepsea. It was in the display case facing on the store's window!...they looked at me kind of weird..(I was wearing walmart swetpants and an unbranded swetshirt ;) )
Nevertheless, they let me try it on. asked price, replied, no discoounts unless I was going to buy now!..I said, need to think about it..
Left the store, called a day later and said."remember me?, I need a discount and BTW I'm on my way"...got there and they were surprised to see me...ended up purchasing it with a nice discount...

I bought my DJ from an AD which was part of a chain and returned some years later looking to by a GMTIIC. I explained that I had got my DJ there and although they let me handle the GMTIIC, the guy had a very "couldn't care less" attitude, which annoyed me somewhat as I was willing to drop £4K+ on one of his watches.

I left empty handed and arranged to visit an independent AD more than twice the distance away. The service I received from then was fantastic and they also offered a significant discount.

I wore jeans and trainers to both shops and although I can't be sure if that was why the chain staff behaved the way they did it certainly made no difference to the independent, hence the reason they got the sale. To be honest I would have given the independent the sale even without the discount.

I agree with some of the other guys, just don't go back to an AD who doesn't treat you well. It's not a Casio you're buying!

That sales person was an idiot. I tried on a DSSD a few weeks ago; and it was in the display window.
