Two Tone versus Stainless Steel

At one time at least, I was under the impression that most Rolex collectors would either buy Stainless Steel or perhaps the all gold/platinum Day/Date models, but they tended not to like the Two Tone models as much, whether the Datejust or the sport models. Am I off on this? The reason I ask is because for some reason the last few months I have seen a lot of two tone models, especially compared to ss and I just wondered if this was a new trend or if perhaps my original perceptions were off to begin with. Another motive I have for asking generally is because a few months ago I saw a two tone Datejust with a bi-color dial that really attracted my attention. However, I did wonder if two tone models get priced lower proportionately (in other words, have a lower resale price percentagewise than if they were stainless steel)) in the used/resale market than do either stainless steel or the full gold/platinum models?

Good post, Haakon.

Many of us still prefer the TT watches inspite of knowing fully well that we are getting ripped off.

Classic example: Price of SS Sub-date $5175.
Price of TT Sub-date $7825.

So we pay an extra $2650 for a piddleshit amount of gold....but then this is the difference you see, my friend!!

...and then there's GOLD!!

Well myself not a fan of any gold in watches, but I do like the TT subs. And if I was going to buy a Daytona,I would certainly chose the TT rather that pay over the odd for a SS.

I really don't like YG on a man's watch, not even a TT.

White metals are the way to go, whether stainless, platinum, tantalum... just not YG. I'm only now warming to RG. But barely.

I know it does, Mikey. I made the foolish mistake of getting rid of it for the TT YM....and now, hopefully, I'll have it back very soon!!

Keeping fingers crossed.

I personally can't stand yellow gold....almost makes my stomach churn. It's kind of like the color orange is to Ed.

A family member of mine who owns upwards of 30 Rolexes has an interesting theory on this.

He believes that over the past 5 years or so, the SS models have been very popular as well as larger sized watches such as Panerai and the other 44mm variants. He follows Rolex buying trends and has noticed within the past year or so the TT has been picking up in popularity due to the demand of SS and that deals can sometime be had on TT. After TT starts selling well again he sees Gold following. He thinks that buying Gold Rolexes right now is a good investment.

Me personally, I am not too big a fan of Gold, however the TT Sub, GMT, and Daytona look great!

I was kind of wondering if there was a stronger trend towards buying the Two Tones--it just seemed like things were changing to me, because I believe at one time most people far preferred the stainless steel Datejusts, perhaps for practical reasons (durability, etc.) and maybe just aesthetic. Regardless, it just seems like they have become more common lately and I happened to try one on a couple of months ago and it was pretty nice, so I became curious. Interesting how trends change or reverse themselves. Thanks for your comments.

I have always liked TT watches, as well as gold watches. The fascination with all SS watches is understandable, as they are also beautiful watches, but the sometimes expressed idea that a true sport watch must be pure SS seems odd to me. I don't think I've ever seen a sportier watch than the TT Sub. I don't think it's any less tough than a SS sport watch of similar style. Scratches on gold are usually surface scratches that blend in anyway, while scratches on SS are usually more visible, at least to my eyes. I understand those who simply don't like the color of yellow or rose gold, and those who simply like the look of white metals; but, in my opinion, the TT and gold models, though perhaps not in vogue in the 90's, are coming back into popularity. I know I see more gold watches these days than I did in the 90s. In one of my favorite watch stores in Tokyo, one that caters to collectors, almost the entire staff wear YG watches, although theirs are on leather straps.

Do you guys consider the platinum/SS combination TT? I mean, it's all white metal, but it's a precious metal and SS. Thoughts?

No, I think of the plat/ss as an extension of the SS line.

Also, I love them all....TT, Gold, Plat...........just my budget only allows for the SS models! :-)

The SS/Pt. YM is a cracker. While not exactly a TT watch, it has a very beautiful dial and bezel made from the best precious metal.

Saw it on the wrist of my AD the other day and I thougth it looked absolutely stunning!!
