Sea Dweller

While visiting an AD tonight, I learned he has a new Sea Dweller in the safe and will be calling me with a price tomorrow.

I'm pretty new to TRF and Rolex addiction and, while I totally trust this guy, I don't want to over-pay. But, I know this watch has been discontinued and that it may be difficult to assign a "fair" price. So, can anyone give me some guidance and advice as to what I should pay?

Thanks!

The last US MSRP was $6400. I'm not sure how many new SDs are out there at ADs now and the answer to that would affect whether a discount off MSRP is likely and if so how much. Also if it's a big chain they may just say MSRP as a matter of policy, if it's more of a family-run place and assuming there are still a reasonable number of new SDs out there, maybe they would let it go for 10% off?

The economy is still recovering and AD's are still trying to make a sale. Ask for 18% off list (with cash in hand, of course and ready to buy) and see what he says. Keep in mind that AD profit margin is 40% on a Rolex. Sales tax is 9.25% here in Santa Clara County (probably pretty close in Southern California) so a 10% discount would pretty much just save you the sales tax.

It's a buyers market.

Post photos once you buy it !

Any discount is good as AD's are not suppose to offer discounts on Rolex watches.

When they tell you it's rare and discontinued, remind them it was never a big seller compared to the sub, is not rare and it was replaced by a "much upgraded" model, so they need to make you a better deal.
I would holdout for no less than 15%! If your dealer can't get you the discount, just ask for the manager. If he has to get back to you with the price, he's not making the decisions, whatever his title may be.
Post some photos!

The SD is a great watch and they can still be found at AD's everywhere. Don't let him fool you with all the discontinued mumbo jumbo, there is no shortage of SD'ers in this world. You should be able to negotiate a nice discount if they are not a major chain, best of luck.

Agreed. It should be easy to get 15% off or more. They may not WANT to, but....
Besides, some of these Sea Dwellers have been in their inventory for some time....They've already paid for it, and depending on how long they've had it, the MSRP could have actually gone up. Good luck and post pisture, PLEASE.

Every AD here in Ga., and I mean EVERY one of them is discounting Rolexes, except the Daytona, and maybe the Milguss. You don't even have to twist their arm. Gold, and TT models esp.!

I agree it is not really rare, but if you tell them that, surely it is backing up their theory. Because in years to come it will be harder to find a Sea Dweller than a Submariner due to the fact there weren't so many sold.

Have you paid any attention to the posts here on TRF in the past 6-8 months? If this were two years ago, yes, I would agree.

Now, on a run-of-the-mill SS Sub/ND/SD/GMT/AK/basically everything except a Daytona, unless you get 15% discount, head for the door.

All three AD's I have had dealings with were up to 20% discount on the SD, ND, and Sub date. If you have trouble with this particular AD, I'm sure somebody here can help you find one that's more than willing to discount one for you.
