Impulse purchase

Most people impulse buy when they are window shopping on things they have no intention of buying in the first place. I do but on things that are cheap or something I have been looking for but cannot find before.

But has anyone purchased a Rolex on impulse without the thought of buying a watch?

I certainly wouldn't as I cannot afford to buy such an expensive item on a wimp. Even if I can afford the money I still have to research the item and make sure is what I want or need.

There is a TV money advice person in the UK called Martin Lewis. He always says before any purchase there are a three golden rules:
1) Do I need it?
2) Can I afford it?
3) Can I get it cheaper?

Great advice - from some of the posts I've seen here, this shoud be a STICKY!!!

Martin's website is choc full of UK bargains but not unsurprisingly I have yet to see any Rolex deals posted on there! Also if you follow his three golden rules you would never buy a Rolex as you would fail at the first hurdle!

I bought my wife's SS Date on what could be called an impulse.......I knew what I wanted but had almost given up finding it......I happened to walk past the AD local to us at the time by total chance and it was there in the window....I had absolutely no hesitation in walking in and buying it.....but seconds before I was nowhere near thinking I would be buying a Rolex........just the right place at the right time and there was no way I was passing it by......that was just before Christmas 1997....it was her Christmas present....to say she still loves it would be the undertstatement of the century

Oh my... Just bought my Milgauss GV last Oct 31 on an impulse buy.... and I mean impulse... after having my lunchbreak..

1) ME and my wifey likes GV alot and been hunting it for quite a while. Let's be honest here... Nobody needs a Rolex watch.. But we want it!

2) Yes I can.

3) Can I get it cheaper? No way. Its enough that you can buy on MSRP. Because like daytona... GV usually are not available on ADs. Grey usually will sell it at a higher rate.

Rule 1 : is ridiculous when applied to items like Rolex or any luxury goods . What
do we need anyway apart food and drink and air to breath ?
Rule 2 : is easy enough to answer
Rule 3 : On many occasions you can get cheaper , but at what price .. ? wait how long?
for you to regret NOT having bought it there and then ? I do not need advice

I bought my first sub like that. I was driving past an AD one evening in a works van, I had dirty building clothes on and my work mate was next to me. I spotted a submariner in the window...stopped the van went in to have a look, because the subs were hard to get a few years ago in the UK, and came out with it. My work mate couldn't believe it.

I made a purchase like this a few days ago. I mean, I knew everything humanly possible about the one I bought and knew what a good price point was, I just had no intention of buying it when I went into the shop. I was going into the shop for a completely seperate reason. It just grabbed me and wouldn't let go. Because buying a Rolex is kinda one of those items that you buy for reasons all your own, I don't think the gentleman's rules you quoted, with all due respect to his work, would apply.

I agree - need does not come into a luxury watch purchase...

I have been impulsive...but never to the point of not thinking about a watch before I went looking...but I have bought a Rolex that I didn't mean to

Well if you can impulse buy a watch, a ROLEX for that matter, then you most likely do not have $$ issues .... most of us collect our pennies a little at a time and by the time we have enough to buy it, we know pretty well what we want .....I have imuplse bought $100-$200 seikos .. but big deal ....even if I do not like them, I flip them for a minimal loss ....but ROLEX, no way can I impulse buy that...

I once collected all my $$ for a 14060M ... when I bought it, it did not turn out to be all I thought it was .... just way too old fashioned even when comared to my 16610 or 16600... so I sold it ... all went well ... GLAD IT WAS A SUB ...sold like a hot cake!

This Martin Lewis guy is giving advice for those who are in deep financial trouble or those who do not have any money at all .... If I only bought the things I needed, then I would be living in a tent .... If your ducks are all lined up in a row, then go ahead and splurge on yourself .... ain't taking anything with you my friend .... gonna leave it all behind ....once that tick tock machine behind your chest stops ... it is GAME OVER!!

have to say my GV is also a pretty implusive purchase as well as the DJII.
How can anyone pass up a good opportunity especially on something you fell in love at first sight?

Bought 2 omegas (speedy pro & 42mm planet ocean) for me during our honeymoon trip in Barbados. They were both impluse buy also.

I new I was going to buy a Rolex but was planning on waiting
a year. The wife and I went to sell some old gold jeqelry
.When the jewelry store clerk started writing us the check,
I made some comment.about puttinh the check towards my first rolex.

We were in Maui and my wife wanted to go handbag shopping, so off to the mall we went. We walked by Baron & Leeds and they had a fantastic window display of lots of different Rolex models. My wife is really attracted to shiny (and usually expensive) things and wanted to go in to look at jewelry. While she and my daughters were looking I started to kill time by trying on watches, until I got to the DD. You know that feeling you get when you try on the perfect watch? I had that feeling big time.
So anyway, we left the store without the watch but I guess I kept talking about it because at one point while in the Gucci store my wife turns around and says to me "just go buy the flippin watch!" and my oldest daughter says "yeah dad, sheesh!" So I went back and bought the DD.

I had seen the Milgauss in a magazine a few months after I bought the DD and thought it was stunning but completely forgot about it. About 6 months later I was back in Maui and stopped by Baron & Leeds again after dinner. As soon as I walked in a saw the Milgauss and had to have it! I tried it on and loved it but knew I had been drinking and didn't want to pull the trigger right then. When I went back the next morning it was gone and I had to catch a flight back to the mainland.
Two weeks later I was back in Maui and as I was walking to dinner I passed by Baron & Leeds, decided to stop back in to take a look. As I walking in the door the manager had a big smile on her face and said "look what I have". It was another Milgauss!! I was so excited I bought it on the spot.

So there you have it, my first two Rolex were both impulse buys.

I think there have been a few good *impulse* stories posted here on TRF. I am always in awe of them. I have yet to transact such a purchase myself though. Maybe someday...

The finest DD I have seen. I would take it personally without the diamonds, perhaps with roman numerals (i could not pull off diamonds on my wrist!). second to that, the pyramid dial. Both beautiful. Your combination is extraordinarily tasteful and unique.

I wear it about once a week, usually with jeans since I'm not a dress up kind of guy. I even wear jeans to Board meetings.

I say go for it, a DD would be a great addition to your current collection and would look really nice on your wrist.
