I was wondering the same thing. My IIc isn't very bright generally and seems to lose its glow rapidly. I went on a tour of a cave three weeks ago and, about an hour in, the guide shut off all the lights - for a couple of minutes. You could not see your hand in front of your face. When I looked at my IIc I could just barely see the lume glowing and could barely make out what time it was. I expected it would be very visible as we'd been outdoors in sunlight for at least an hour beforehand.

Maybe the IIc doesn't have the same lume used on the divers?

Either expose it to full sunlight or place it under a lamp for some time. Should get fully charged.

It is very difficult to judge lume from a posted photograph. A long exposure can make the lume appear much brighter than it does to the eye.

A few minutes of almost any bright light should charge your lume to its maximum. So far I am not impressed with Rolex's lume. It does not seem to have much in the way of duration. Initial brightness might be impressive, but that is really less important than long time readability.

Buy a powerful but small Surefire flashlight. It's a great light to have on your nightstand regardless of the watch. Shine in on the face for two minutes. I could read my sub at 5:45 this morning. That's the good news. The bad news is that when I saw what time it was I had to get up for a drive to Tucson.

The lume on my GMT IIC is just OK, not nearly as good as my Seiko 5's.

While the added surface area of the maxi-dial helps a bit, Rolex has never been known to have the best lume. The price you pay for white indices.

I have noticed the chromalight used on the DSSD, while not as intense, does seem to have more "legs" than the superluminova.

lume is not really the strong point of Rolex

i found my Omega and Seiko's lume to be much more satisfying.

having said that, to maximize your "lume" experience, beware that you have to "fully charge the watch", and have "night / dark adapted vision"

and maxi dial helps (thats why i sold my SD for a GMT IIc)

I found a big difference between my submariner and my LV when I got it due to the maxi dial. But to be honest the lume aint a patch on my cheap and cheerful citizen divers. And one of them is at least 10 years old.

You're right.
Dont use a photo as a reference for illumination.
