Datejust 1601

What do you guys think? Does it look OK? Bear in mind that it is 43 years old.

Any thoughts guys?

I think the bracelet looks good for it's age. The watch is from around 1966. But I'm wondering about what the marks are on the outer edges of the dial from the 1 o'clock position to the 11 o'clock position.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Nice old DJ.

You don't say if it has been opened and checked out lately.

Colud be some moisture has got in at some time and has discoloured the edge of the dial?

The seller has told me that it had a service 18 months ago (not RSC) and the hair spring and seals were replaced. It was also pressure tested. He does state that the second hand has a slight stagger from 12 to 4, but it still keeps relatively good time +3 seconds/day.

Is a slight stagger normal for a watch of this age?

Well as it wasn't RSC its possible , otherwise I presume the dented case back would have been replaced . If anything the watch seems genuine and "in keeping" with its age , but no way of knowing how it really looks , moisture as mentioned above by Eddie is a distinct possibility

I just checked with the seller. The dial is free from any discolouration. The marks are actually a reflection of the camera on the edge of the crystal

What makes it a pie pan?

I've read this term quiet a bit recently looking at other 1601s for comparison.

Koyuryoku, Pie Pan is a term that essentially says the dial is not flat but shaped more like a pie pan. If you look, the dial curves down at the outer edge. This type of dial was used in early Datejusts 1600 1601, 1603, etc.

Looks like a pretty nice example of a 1601. AS an FYI, the 1601 has the white gold fluted bezel, the 1603 has the stainless coin edge bezel.

Hope you work out a good deal on it. Greg

Thanks for the information Greg ,

I just sent the funds today, so I should be getting it sometime at the end of the week I'm thinking about getting a nice black leather strap for it. What do you think?

I think it's your watch now and you should do whatever makes you happy, but I'd give the Jubilee a chance, ironically stretched ones are quite comfortable. Your call.

Good point. I tried on a couple of similar watches last week and they were very comfortable.

So true...Jubilees do wear quite comfortably. On the other hand, the vintage Datejusts look great on straps. Personally, I would get the strap and swap them out occasionally. Either way, it is a great looking 1601.

Congrats on the purchase.

A very nice, clean watch! Only advice I might offer re. an older 1601 is a quick check on the jubilee, look for any weak/worn/damaged links and pay special attention to the pins in the clasp. I had a worn clasp pin on my NQS DJ come loose when driving - all by gravity, slipped down my sleeve (duh! whats this?). Worm jubilee is very smooth and comfortable as everyone reports. The black strap looks great too! Best wishes, man!
