A little scared
For the experts,
All this talk about really good fakes, and even now faking the movements (which shocked me), I wanted to know if they are faking the new warranty cards, and matching them with the fake serial numbers. I am worried if I can ever buy a used watch again. I wonder if I am really good enough to tell a true high-end fake vs. the real thing. It scares me. What say you all? David |

I wouldn't be surprized, and as with everything, the more it costs, the better it will be. If you pay serious money, ie the same as for a genuine one, I imagine the makers may see it worthwhile to include fake cards.
However in my experience fakes generally are not accompanied with papers etc, and quite often, no box either. |

It is tough to tell and that is why if I am not buying from an AD odds are it will be from here on the forum.
Too many shady people out there to risk it with Ebay or something like that. Sure there is buyers protection you can take even with Ebay (paying via US Postal Money order, American Express etc etc) BUT your money is still tied up for a bit, you are stuck dealing with phone calls and headaches to sort it all out so I rather not risk it myself and just buy from one of the many trusted members and dealers on here.

I think it worries many of us that aren't experienced.
I wonder if the quality of easier to knock off items such as sunglasses and purses have reached production quality. Very scary.

I saw very good fakes in Turkey over the summer. Sold openly on the street markets with big signs proclaiming, "Genunine Fake Watches".
Don't know about the certificates though. I doubt they were doing that there, as they were openly selling fakes. Counterfeit certificates and boxes would be something that a crook would do in order to rip someone off. I don't see a lot of anti-counterfeiting measures in my warranty papers. There are no hidden fluorescent ink or threads in the paper, and I didn't notice a watermark. |

Some fakes are very good. I dont get it personally. Why bother?
Buy the real thing. What is the point otherwise? Also, the fake movements, wouldn't fool anyone who has ever seen a real Rolex movement. |

but i dont think the fakes can exactly copy the laser engraving inside the crystal. the rolex rolex rolex and the serial no.. so it's safer to buy the recent models with laser engraving..just my 2 cents...

Not really. Laser engraving equipment is inexpensive and readily available. Even the article jclevoy linked says the engraving is common on the fakes.

Honestly, on some of the "Watch out" postings, I can't figure out what makes a particular watch a fake. Sure, some are obvious (e.g. day of week sub-dials on Daytona) but others are quite good. One day I may "pull the trigger" on a vintage Rolex, and when I do I'm planning on going through a reputable dealer. I will not bid blindly on Ebay or Craig's List.

If you have ever held the real article in your hands you can tell a fake in a minute. The problem exists when you buy over the internet.

That one's a classic, but it got me thinking
If a genuine fake is just that, a fake, does it follow that a counterfeit fake isn't really a fake but a genuine watch? Sometimes my head hurts.
