Concern: Anyone agree?

A friend called me about a watch he was looking at on EBAY.

The dial on this is absolutely horrific: The sapphires are at the very least stickers and at best blue "something". (when I take pictures of my watch {TT sub serti}no matter the angle there is translucency) The diamond sets have different sizes especially hour marker 2 and 4. There is extra metal noticeable on marker 10. I know it says custom dial but this is alittle concerning. The font on Swiss-T looks odd,

Am I crazy here?

The buyer has good feedback 100%
A lot of good photographs
Details on the watch is good.
I am not no Sub expert however it looks good. If the watch was bought it should be authenticated when it arrives.

Why in the world would anyone put a fake dial and fake bezel on a brand new Sub?...and for $7,500. No way I would buy this.

No I'm not..just my personal thoughts on the watch. The seller says it's a 2010 yet the dial and bezel are "After Market" .

A new Sub can be had for less than $6K and I would rather buy that than a watch that has been opened and monkeyed with.

I also don't think that the crown guards are quite right either.

See, that is what I mean about Ebay. To me as a layman without knowing Subs it looks good. Now finding out about the fake dial and bezel the it makes the Sub less valuable. The seller removed the authentic dial and bezel made money off of them and now is trying to sell the watch a full face value. Another scam.

It just seems off. Anyway thanks for the responses. My friend needs to just go to an AD instead of auction sites.....preventing these questions.

Looks like a "franken watch" built with gen and replica parts IMO. I wouldn't go near that one...

It's a real sort of

I have also delt with this seller before and have confidence he is legit. Hoever if this does not come with the original dial and bezel it is not worth anywhere near the asking price. Why would someone mess with a great watch and make it trashy i'll never guess.

I'm looking more at the workmanship, and quality of the stones. The two 0'clock marker has an oval bezel holding the diamond. The diamonds are very poor quality, and don't match at all. Some are foggy, while some are dark. This looks like a fabricated marker upgrade. Everything else looks normal to me. I wouldn't pay for that. You can get the new one, and put the original dial in safe keeping while you get a tricked out aftermarket if you wish. Don't ever change something that can't be changed back.

Thanks for the FYI. No personal attacks necessary. It's an obviously very very poor dial. It's a concern and should be for any buyer---good seller, good friend or not. No accusations made other than as posted... a concern for my friend who might have purchased this...interesting watch. Thanks for your input.

Well everyone has to make a living. I hope they get top dollar on the interesting watch and I'm sure they will ---just not from a friend of mine.

When that first showed up several days ago, I called them and asked what the deal was. Some idiot had that done to the watch. Seems the o/p didn't like the color of the new bezel and wanted a different dial. Then after all is said and done, trades for a high end YachtMaster they had plus cash ............. Takes all kinds I guess. Plus we need to take into account where they are located in the valley.

I guess it is what it says it is . Original SUB with aftermarket parts and exaggerated price tag . In my book all non original or modified parts added on a Rolex reduces its value , I guess not in California . Just look at the lovely girls on Santa Monica beach they tend to be heavily "modified" as well and they are usually pretty expensive in up keep

Endurance watches from ebay have been discussed often here on TRF. They list many, Rolexes with altered or aftermarket dials and parts. It must be working for them.

Think about it if they stick a crappy dial on it for a 100.00 and then sell the authentic Rolex dial for 500.00 think of the profit they can make same goes for the bezel. I see scams like this on Ebay they put aftermarket bands to make it look really good in fact the band cost maybe a couple of hundred bucks and the real one sells for a thousand. One way to beat the depression.

As a lay person I did not know the difference until someone who knows the problem pointed it out to me. That is why I will never buy a Rolex on Ebay. I have learned so much on TRF. You do not know what cheap movemet is installed into a Rolex watch until a problem occurs and you have a wake up call.

I posted a general question in a separate thread on why someone would do this to a genuine, new Rolex (which is what is claimed for this one). Don't really understand the motivation. The seller does have great feedback.

Perhaps these folks just try to maximize their return by selling the watch and the taken-off parts separately. I don't think eBay should permit these watches to be listed as Rolex.

The advantage you have is that several of them are in your back yard so to speak. As they are bricks and mortar stores, all you have to do is drive up the 5 from S D to the L A basin area. Walk in the front door and ask to see the watch ! I'd love to be able to do that. Just because a Rolex is sold on eBay doesn't make it bad. The safe guards on eBay sure beat Creigh's list !
