Submariner Frankenwatch on eBay
I recently learned the term "Frankenwatch" from a discussion on another thread. I believe someone else recently posted about this possible example:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=190361956498 The dial is referred to as "custom", and the seller mentions the watch also has an aftermarket bezel. And yet he also says the watch is a brand new 2010 specimen, never even tried on by anyone. First of all, it seems odd that someone would alter a brand new Rolex, thereby invalidating the factory warranty (and having to supply their own warranty, as this seller appears to do). Second, the dial seems to me suspect as anything other than an aftermarket dial. It indicates at the bottom that the luminescence is tritium-based, which I believe Rolex no longer uses. So I wonder if anyone has an opinion on what the motivation would be for creating such a Frankenwatch? Could it be that the seller puts on cheaper aftermarket items that appear to add "bling" and then sells the genuine items he replaced separately? If so, it would appear that he would need to get a very good return on the watch and parts to compensate for having to offer his own warranty. Unless the warranty is bogus. This seller seems to have extremely good feedback, however. Or perhaps the watch is really not new, or was somehow damaged. Either way, it appears to me misrepresentation is involved and the listing should be pulled. Does eBay consider Frankenwatches as not genuine Rolex products? Wonder if anyone has comments on the above. Thanks. |

I would think the term :"frankenwatch" would refer to, for example...a "ss sub" being converted to a "TT sub" or a watch with borrowed parts such as it's movement from another wach.
In the description the seller states in bold that the dial has been converted and there is its aftermarket bezel. ?? |
