Progressive or Allstate?

I've been with Allstate for 33 years and they have been my only auto insurance. Today I get the 6 month renewal. 20% increase for 3 vehicles. Well that puts them at $1,000 for 6 month policy, so I call. No fault of mine, 2007 Mustang no longer gets new car discount. It's a true garage queen anyway, 701 miles in 3 years.

So I go online to www.progressive.com. I like the online service VERY much. Better coverage limits (just a tad bit better than Allstate). There is a new Progressive facility within 8 miles of our home. $400 less.

AM Best for Progressive looks as good or better than Allstate.

Any complaints about Progressive here?

Call a few local agents that deal with multiple companies and get quotes. My insurance is about $500 a year less than what Progressive wanted. Geico was at least $200 less than Progressive.

I've had Safeco auto insurance for the last 8 years or so. Good rates and absolutely first rate response if you've had an accident. I got hit by a cell phone pilot about 6 months ago and they did a steller job of getting my pickup fixed until his crappy insurance company finally paid up.

You live in Georgia (I don't think Farmers serves in Georgia), otherwise I would have referred you to Farmers Insurance - by far the best customer service + they meet all my insurance needs (Auto, Home, Life & Boat) in one place. Been with them for over 13 years and no issues whatsoever.

That being said, Progressive all the way, although that crazy lady in their TV commercials is a little freaky!!!

I do have a question, a few years ago we looked into Progressive. They wanted to do a credit check which we found to be overboard for insurance. We have had Travelers for many years. Is that something just with Progressive or is that somewhat common with insurance? We did not feel comfortable with it.

I had Gieco for several years, I had one "no fault" accident and they jacked my rates way up. While their rates were very good, once you have something happen forget it. Kiss your rates goodbye.

I own a company that specializes in repair of storm, flood, & fire damage to residential and commercial property. We deal directly with the insurance companies and Allstate is by far the worst company when dealing with a claim, in my opinion. When we are very busy we will not take on any Allstate claims due to the hassle they put us and the insured through. Most of my customers here in Texas end up switching after their claim is handled. Though I do not deal in auto repair, I would imagine that their practices would closely resemble property, which is not good.

Almost all of them do it now. Apparently people with good credit ratings have fewer claims than those with poor credit scores, at least that is what they say.

Had Geico for a few years then switched to Progressive because they were cheaper. I have been extremely pleased with both Geico & Progressive, the way I see it you can't go wrong with either company.

However do make note of this, you may also have to do some additional research about this as well but....... Some dealerships here in NJ are not providing customers with loaner cars to individuals that have Geico because they say that Geico does not cover loaner cars in their policies..... I haven't validated whether that is true or not but you may want to check it out....

Actually, their home owners sucks, but their auto is great. With that said, my husband was an auto adjuster with them for years and he knows all the adjusters. They gave us the full amount for both my Viper and our pickup when we were hit by uninsured / hit and run. I was very pleased.

I am stuck though with the homeowners because I am on the coast in South Louisiana. In 2008 we got hit with 14k in damage to my house and fence. My deductible was 10 k and the estimate they gave was 7 k, so I ate 14 k in damages.....yes $14,000.00

So when the house is paid off, I plan to drop my wind and hail and just keep fire and flood. Then I can self insure for wind and hail.

I only have 2 cars on Allstate...the other 5 are with American Collector's and I highly recommend specialty car insurance if you have a garage queen. Same limits, stated value policy and about 1/2 to 1/3 the cost. You have to have a garage and you have to have your daily drivers insured with a regular company. I can drive 2500 miles a year (each) on the collector cars and I get the total stated value if anything is stolen or totalled.

Good Luck!

I think Progressive should be worth looking at. If they offer the same coverage for less, give them a shot. Get a quote from progressive, and have it mailed to you. Take the papers in to Allstate. Ask them what the deal is. If they can't atleast match Progressive, let them go. I've been with Progressive for the past few years. I haven't done anything more than make payments, but the price was just fine.

I've been a property adjuster for a while now, and know exactly how Allstate and other insurance companies compare, and exactly what the adjusters are thinking and doing throughout the process. I won't comment on the above quote, but if anyone has any questions on the claims process, including what to say to your adjuster and how the process actually works, always feel free to ask me.

I did the on line quote for Amica and it was higher than Allstate. Not nearly as automated either. Both Progressive and Gieco knew the 3 vehicles in my name and at my address.

FWIW, no violations last 15 years or accidents. Wife 48, me 50. 796 and 801 FICO scores. 12 years at residence.

Progressive was high 600's, Gieco low 700's, Allstate 1,000, Amica 1,000.

I was looking at the highest coverage ($500,000) available in all catagories and $1,000 deductable

USAA if you are current/ex military (or had a parent that was) they are the lowest priced and the best knowledgeable staff/support I have ever had the pleasure to deal with.

The quote I've got today was slightly higher than Allstate, but worth it!
For 130 extra a year I get NO 5000$ deductible for hurricane damage, only 500,plus I get sinkhole coverage which Allstate dropped.
Jewelry insurance is up 40$,again worth it.Allstate put it in the same home insurance so if you loose your watch, home owner insurance WILL go up!
I'll have a separate insurance written just for jewelry and no deductible!
Just a heads up!
