Understanding the 18K DD president
Ok experts, I need some help understanding the 18K Day Date before I purchase one.
Is there a quick guide on movements, clasp, etc (improvements and features)? I have been told by a TRF expert that they changed the link from a tapered bracelet to a straight link bracelet in ~ 2002. What other factors should I consider? Thx for any help. Mike |

I am somewhat disappointed in TRF. Not one reply.
I am trying to learn the in's and out's of the Rolex DD. Things like when they started the sapphire crystal, when they made 39mm and 41mm, what movement is best, etc... Please just point me told some information so I can make and educated purchase. ;-) Mike |

Hi Mike. Sorry, I don't know much about the President DD. But, I see you live in Destin. I was there and visited McGuires Irish Pub (great food) after going to the naval museum. Had a great time.

Well, I just spent 30 min typing out a very detailed thread chronicling all of the changes over the years and somewhere along the way I got logged off and it is GONE. My typing sucks and I don't have enough gas to redo it, sorry. Contact bodybump/ Oscar and he can hook you up with all the dirt you'll need. He's in Florida. Quite a nice collection you have going there, the president will make it complete. Good luck!!!

Hi Mike,
I'll try: There are 3 different types of Day Date: Non quickset- Date cannot be set independently of the time. In other words, to advance the date you must advance the time by 24 hours. These were made through 1976 and reference is 1803. Single quickset- This function was added so the date could be set independently, the day has to be set "old school". This model was rolled out around 1977 and the reference is 1803X- the last digit signifies metal type - 6 for platinum, 8 for yellow gold and 9 for white gold (I believe the 9 was also used for the Tridor model). Double quickset- Added the ability to change the date and day independently of the time. These came out in 1988 and the reference is 1823X. In 2000 begining with the P series, the Day Dates were updated with a heavier bracelet- 35%, polished lugs and an updated bezel. The reference for these are 11823X- Actually the 2nd to last digit is the reference for bezel- 2 is fluted, 0 is smooth, 4 is diamond. That's what I "think" I know. Good luck! My advice is to buy the latest model. I went from a 118206 PT Day Date to an earlier 18206 and there is a difference in heft. |

Mike, are you still planning on selling the Daytona to make more room for a YG DD? How did you decide to let that one go?

I definitely recommend going with a "P" or newer model to get the updated bracelet...Its worth the extra money. I am indifferent on the updated clasp. Its nice but in my opinion isn't a deal killer...Happy Hunting.

I found these links.... Which explained why I think the DD was a watch I would like. Introduce the year I was born.

Just go with a K or better--2002 plus--the new clasp is very nice. Also--the newer double quick sets had solid links vs. hollow--watch 30% heavier--that was P and better.

You asked for opinions, so here you go. I would only buy the the DD not the DDII. DD in 36mm is classic and timeless. I would only buy the newer heavier bracelet. It is top shelf and solid as a rock, none of this stretching crap. Beyond that gold color, bezel types, and dial options are endless and the fun part.
If you are going to spend the money, don't save "a little" and buy an older version. Get the newest and needed improvements. I wear a 118208 almost daily. My 2 cents... -Eddie

TY - When you say the newest is that "K" and up or "M" & "V"?

P or newer will have the heavy bracelet. I am not sure when the lug tops started to be polished, but I like this look much better than when Rolex was brushing them. Just a more updated look to the newer DD's I personally would find a a F D Z watch. The deals are not that much better on the older ones. Buy the newest you can.

The current incarnation of the Day-Date uses the cal. 3155, apart from the Day-Date II which uses the cal. 3156. Not a huge amount of difference, I believe the 3156 is made completely from in-house parts. Newer Day-Date Is should have the Parachrom hairspring

Don't know to much about the DD but really like the A LOT !
What I do know is that if you are looking for a stick dial pay attention. In the 'modern' ones with polished lugs there are different stick dials. I like the newer ones but don't care for the older ones. New and old stick dial :

Mike...The only real difference between a "P" and a "K" is the clasp so I would not be shy to pull the trigger on a "P" if you find a deal...Good luck!

All I know about the 18k Day-Date Presidential is that Tony Soprano wears one. So that makes it cool That's all, I know it's no help to your case
