Panerai's Substandard Packaging

I would first like to say that you all have made this a fantastic Panerai resource, and I have enjoyed reading this forum for the past few months. I am the new owner of a 112, and I really could not be any happier with it. It has taken all the wrist time away from my collection of Breitlings.

Having said that, I do have one gripe about the packaging.

I understand we don't buy these watches for their packaging, but for a brand that starts around $5k and quickly goes up from there, I was disappointed to see that the plumwood box is a veneer- a pretty thin one at that. The 'luxury' watch industry is one built upon (among other things) first class marketing. Wouldn't it make sense to maintain that image of unwaivering quality in the product's packaging? I think it just cheapens the whole experience when you find it all a facade.

That's not to say I'm not completely satisfied with the watch!!!! I just wanted to throw my 2 cents out there and see if anyone else had any thoughts on it.

Welcome and congrats on the 112

I think the box is actually pearwood (?)

Well, it's a step up from Rolex packaging - but that's not saying much

Cheers

Agree with above posts. I have Rolex, Omega, Movado and Panerai, and the packaging of PAMs are the best of the bunch IMO.

Congrats on the PAM!

I have no gripe about the packaging and I think it's a lot better than some of the other brands out there.

Needless to say, the 'big' box with key on the SE's are fantastic!

Cheers,

Eric

Its much better than the Omega package I got. And I second that point that I think the wood is actually pear wood.

Agree with most of the sentiment above. I think the Panerai packaging is actually top notch, and miles better than Rolex packaging.

The only thing I really have for comparison is a collection of Breitling boxes which are Bakelite. It suprises me to think the packaging on the more expensive watches would fall a bit short. Having said that, and having read your comments, I guess I'm off the mark on the whole veneered wood thing.

No worries mate : )

Rolex packaging is not really that great (I'm being kind here). That said, as long as it's complete, in good condition and safely stored away then probably not something worth dwelling on.

Now, how about some pics of that lovely 112 ?

Cheers

My 2nd hand watch dealer buddy and I had a laugh several weeks ago, something like this: Is a guy buying a watch to wear, or a box to preserve ?

Odd thing about Paneristi (not "Bad", but odd) is that it's the only brand I know of where the shipping carton is just as important as the inner box(es), and without having all three, nobody's interested in buying the watch.

I guess you don't own many other watch brands.

Omega package sux - the box falls apart over time and turns to mush
Cartier - same as omega
Rolex - can I have a $30k watch with a plastic box?

Panerai is a step up and I thought the box was solid? I'll have to check tonight.

I don't own any other high end brands. I have 5 Breitlings and the Panerai. I realize this is probably the most frivolous complaint ever to be brought up in this forum, but it really strikes me as odd that we dump so much money (a fraction of which is justifiable in terms of materiels and labor) and get veneered balsa wood boxes, or worse in the case of the manufaturers you mentioned!

Here's a pic of the 112. Forgive the photo quality no one will ever mistake me for a photographer, but I am happy to be a member of club Panerai!

How about posting a picture of the 112? The boxes that come with fakes are cheap!

Panerai is really very good compared... I know $5k is a lot of money - and it is... But, in the watch world it is really not... sadly.

Not sure why you feel PAMs have sub-par packaging. From what I see and hear, PAMs have one of the best presentations around.

The box could've been better, but it's the best box amongst those that I have ever seen, including but not limited to Rolex, Longines, Montblanc.. probably Jaeger have a better box - but it's different box for different models for Jaegers (Correct me if I'm wrong)...

Quality of Watch boxes

Talking about watch boxes, which box is most value-for-money, ie the cheaper the watch with the best quality box ?

I had a Glycine Incursore, which cost only a fraction of an entry level PAM. But the box is nice & solidly built with wood, not the shiny surface type, but looks good. Definitely better than the PVC looking surface for Rolex or Omega which I owned
