Are Rolex Acrylic Crystals hallmarked?
How can you tell a fake acrylic crystal from a Genuine Rolex acrylic crystal? Is there any marking to look for?

They have an engraved Coronet at the 6 o clock position. it is tiny and you need to catch the right light to see it.

On acrylic? I'm doubtful, as it could be easily polished off.

Inside and it's drilled dots at different depths in order to maintain the strength of the crystal. That was not possible
to do at the green crystal. Here is how it looks at a replacement crystal.

So how can a Rolex Service Center tell if an acrylic crystal is authentic?

I am glad you asked this question, I was wondering the same thing. If I buy one of these "authentic" Rolex acrylic crystals off of ebay how do I know I am not paying extra for the little plastic bag with Rolex on it. For example for the 5513 an authentic one is $150 where a replica crystal is $10.

Sapphire crystal can be used again with a new gasket. The replacement crystal is marked with a S so Rolex can see if it's the orginal crystal or not at the watch. It's usefull for Rolex under the warranty time for example.

I haven't had good success with my local AD. I have a late 60's TT datejust which the date wheel was not working properly. I had the date wheel fixed and the watch serviced, polished, and new crystal. The bill was around $950. I am not even sure the watch is worth much more than that. Needless to say when I received it the watch looked good but then I noticed the inside of the buckle. Do you know they actually had the nerve to etch the receipt number on the inside of it. I was furious. They fixed it but I vowed I would never go back. I usually just wait until I go to New Orleans or Atlanta for service.

Hmmm...I just took out my 20mm loupe and had a look at my Z series YM.Is does NOT have the etched coronet.Mine was bought from an AD shop,so it's authentic.I wonder why it's missing the etching?
Is Rolex etching all size models,or just the 40mm?I ask,as mine is a 35mm...but it's certainly new enough that I would have expected it to have the laser etching. Thoughts anyone? |

If you're paying 150 for an acrylic crystal you need to find a new watchmaker!!!!! Rik

If you go to an old, established watch maker that services Rolex, they tend to have a good supply of Rolex acrylic crystals in stock. You know it is an original crystal, because they will give you the old one back in the envelope the new one came in. The original Rolex ones are not expensive either, as noted in posts above.
My 1953 Rolex Explorer is at the watchmaker now getting a new crystal and he he had one in stock. Robert |
