GMT II Pepsi M-series value
Hey guys,
Well, I saw a GMT Master II Pepsi M-series for sale and I was curious what the value is on this watch. Keep in mind this is NOT the ceramic one. The person stated that it is in 95% condition and has all boxes, paperwork, tags, and links. It still is also under warranty. What do you guys think is a reasonable price for this watch as this is already discontinued and many people including me is a classic GMT Rolex. |

Around US$4000 I think. But check the GMT II's on sale on the sales corner of this forum for ideas about pricing.

If you can get an M Pepsi for 4k--I will buy 10 of them! The cheapest M Pepsi on Ebay--with the 3186 movement is 6500 right now--LNIB as stated by TurboWatch yesterday. No way in the world will you get one for 4k--or 5k--not an M in great shape with box, papers etc.

~$4,000 for a 3185. You can keep the 3186s. Way over-hyped and over-priced in my opinion.

Exactly--JJ and Oscar--right on. And market price is dictated by demand and that is 6500 plus. As for this post--Jon started it out speaking of an M Pepsi GMT and price of one--There you go Jon--best --Great watch- and the 3186 is worth it as it is a very limited run in comparison--just look at prices on most transtitional watches. I own one--it is a great watch and so few of them around with prices going up.

It's a bit tough to peg a price point for GMTs at the moment since the market has been volatile since its discontinuance. I'd speculate that prices will only go up from here.

$5500 would be a great price and a few months ago you would have found one for that amount.
However, in the last 2 months or so, prices of the 16710 M's have been going up almost daily. There are simply coming to few on the market and more and more people seem to think they 'need' this watch. Result : higher prices. If you can get one under $6K you did well as you will never lose any money on it. But the longer you wait, the more you'll pay.

A little off the subject, but with the 3186 being quite a different movement fromthe 3185, did Rolex have to modify the 16710 dials to fit the new movement??

I have noted that people who dont have the 3186 movement do not like the value compared to those who are lucky enough to have one. I have stated before the prices of the pepsi and coke as well as the black Z or M with the 3186 are having prices speak for themselves. I haven't seen to many with 3185 movements selling for more money. If you have a chance to get one Go For It.

I don't agree, that is more than I would pay. I have seen them sell for $4200-$4500 LNIB and passed one them, but I already owned 2 GMT's at the time. People bring up Fleabay, those sellers are borderline criminals for the prices they are asking, but hey, it's a free country and if someone is dumb enough to throw away a few grand for a classic GMT II, so be it.

Can someone please tell me how to tell the difference between a 3185 and a 3186.
Thanks |

either have the AD crack the back, or MUCH simpler, pull the crown out and rotate it ONE revolution. If the hour hand moves 8 hours, you have 3186. If it moves 6 hours, you have 3185.

Some collectors look for these exact things. Especially movement which was used in a certain model for a very limited time can cause prices to spike. I personally think its a great piece. On top of that there are plenty of people who love the style of the Pepsi and Coke bezels.

We need to stop all the hype-talk on the 3186 Pepsi GMT-IIs. You guys talking about how "rare it is.." and "won't lose money" is driving the prices up.
And I want to buy one. And I don't want to pay $6K.

Is it not five hours per one crown rev on the 3185?

Anyone who thinks a GMT ll M with 3186 movement can be had for 4k-5k obviously have not been in touch with reality as of the last several months--Reality check. Again--The market price is dictated by demand. Next time you have the opportunity to buy one for 4k-5k--please let me know--I am good for as many as you can find--no limit--just make sure it is a complete set--boxes-cert card etc.

The Parachrom balance spring and a few gear tolerances were tightened. Not worth $2k to me but then I don't plan to sell.

It's essentially the same movement with minor changes - but enough to have Rolex give it its own caliber.

It is not only what was changed--it was how few were produced that makes it's collectibility worthwhile. I am sure those who are holding Daytona Patrizzi's are quite happy right about now. Having an M 3186 with the Eleven dial in perfect shape is a good thing--not a whole lot of them out there. Do a search and you will see--this is old thread material. Again--If you can get them for the 4k-5k that people have been claiming--please let me know--I will buy them all up!!!

If it's an M serial, then it is also definitely a 3186. As far as I'm aware (and it's not an uneducated statement), all M serial GMT II's that were made had 3186.
I got a coke M from DavidSW myself a few months ago, and, like JJ, paid a small premium for the 3186. Definitely not regretting that purchase. |

Correct--all of the M and some of the late Z are 3186--and I am not regretting mine either!

The one that just sold for $4900 + shipping is from a seller who does not know the current market value. You can easily test this by contacting grey market dealers and see what they will offer for an M 16710. $5300 to $5650 is what they are willing to pay, these are real offers I got for mine! Add profit (they are not a charity) and you'll see them go for $6000 to $6500 depending on what they paid and the profit they want. And in the coming years this watch will only go up. So even if someone would pay 6K today he would be happy in 2 or 3 years when he sees the same watch selling for 7K and beyond. If somebody wants to hold out for one at -5000 he can do so and if he gets really lucky he'll find one, but maybe he will wait to see them go past 7K. So to those who want one, now is still a good time to buy. Why ? Because they are still around list price which was 5750 + tax = $6100 (depending state) Collector watches are usually traded way beyond list and in 5 years the M 16710 will be no difference.
