Fair price for an SD?

I've got a grey dealer asking for the following BNIB:
Z @ 5900
M @ 6000
V @ retail...possibly more.

Further, there are 2 AD's - one asking for an M @ 6400 and another asking for a V @ 7000. I know the SD's are becoming a tough item to come upon. I get it. However, do you think these prices are a bit over the top? Are these dealers capitalizing on the demand?

I'll take the V@retail, BNIB - who's got one?

Capitalizing on demand - how unAmerican

I think you should be able to do better with some of the reputable sellers here on TRF.

i would wait and see, in my opinion the sea dweller 16600 model will return at some point in the near future as not everybody can weasr a deep sea, the other alternative is to get the Tudor Hydronaut 1200 which isw fantastic at £2450, have a look on the tudor web site and you will be pleased, I have one of these and love it.

You're telling me a BRAND-NEW-IN-BOX SEA DWELLER can be found for around $4500? I find that a bit hard to believe... Maybe pre-owned, but BNIB? I doubt it...

This is a very germane thread to me. Like Nauticajoe I'm actively looking for a SD. If there is a BNIB (or even a LNIB / "perfect example") Z-series for $4,500 out there please point me to it. Thanks in advance!

M 4.5k
V around 5k

No pre-owned but excellent, near mint condition. The deals are out there but you need to move quick when you find them.

OK - I'll put the post out on WTB and see where it goes. Appreciate the advice on the price points.

No way. The 16600 is gone for good. It was never a huge seller for Rolex with the Submariner so similar. Remember............The WIS population makes up a FRACTION of the entire population that buys Rolexes. With the SD gone, most people will just buy a Submariner.

JMHO though.

I agree with Mac $4,500 is about right. Play this idea if you want to see what grey dealers are paying for SD. Call up a dealer say you have a perfect Z and ask what they will pay $3,000 or lower is the going rate. Anything over three g's is pure money in the bank for the dealer. A no date Sub is selling to the deaaler for $1,500 to $2,000. At this rate if the Sub is perfect I'll take two please. You usually take it when you sell, don't sell unless it is to a private party who will pay more IMHO.

You think its going to fizzle out? Waiting it out is similar to hedging on crude oil; had I known...I would have stocked up on a few barrels to store in my basement.

The reason for the scarcity is because some guy named Jason on TRF keeps snatching up all the SDs that come up!

the way i see it

the going price for an M or V serial SD in near new quality is around $4500 from someone on TRF or TZ, but NOT from any brick and mortar store, whether its an AD or not. Its just not going to happen. If you buy from an AD, the last retail on an SD M or V series was $6400.00. So, I would predict the most discount available is around 10%. This discount rate may vary depending upon the state of the local economy, and whether the purchaser has purchased other high value items in the past from the dealer. So, when you ask what is a fair price for an SD, you have to distinguish between a brick and mortar grey market dealer, where you have more security of authenticity, or a TRF online seller. With the later you get a giant savings, but the risk increases precipitously.

Also, I dont think dealers will price an M series any differently than a V series because to do so would be to admit that the Z, M, V, etc serial numbers indicate newer timepieces and that would reflect poorly on the dozens of Y, Z, M, etc series Datejusts they have in the displays....

I agree @mattmartin, $4500 isn't going to happen from a reputable dealer. Your dealer pricing series differently either means he's a newbie, or the guys just very generous. I'm an oldie and have never experienced a dealer going through series seperately but I've never asked. Older basic rolexes come cheaper to dealers but as mattmartin said, it's not in their best interests to price differently. All the gray dealers and ADs I know work on % so always try for top dollar across the board. $4500 seems low unless youre talkin used or if you can get your dealer to give an older series for cheaper, and if you can, spread the love - pass on his info to us. Jusdt my two cents

So who should I wire this $4,500 (what the heck let's make it $4,750) to for the mythical new quality v-serial SD? Sure would like to do so...

Sorry - frustrating thread...

Another dealer is offering 5900 for a V (unworn), which I think is more realistic....vs. the 5900 for an M from another dealer originally mentioned in my post.
