i have been told that rolex was using 316 until 1987 or 88. so, its better to check the year of manufacture but i think all 16013 used 316

I don't think that anybody can give you an absolute answer to that.. It was about that time - 1986/87 - that Rolex changed over to 904L for their cases but most only point to the Sub 168000 as being the first ones.. But, people dwell on the SS models and fail to note when the TT and Gold models change...frequently before the SS do.
It is practically impossible to tell the difference without a chemical analysis....

Have to agree with Larry but whether its 316L 0r 904L it does not really matter in the real world. As if you did not know the chenical mix of the steel you would never know the difference.

Mine was originally purchased (by me) in February 1987. Whatever the stainless steel is, it's kept the 3035 movement safe and sound for 23 years . . . and should continue to do so for another 23 . . . or maybe 40 years (by then I'll be 98 and won't give a damn).
