Rolex DJ vs. Omega LE
Hello guys,
I was in the Rolex official store and had a look on the DateJust 116200, Price $4,950 looks exactly like OR The Limited Edition Omega Proffessional, Price $4,300 Please advice me my fellow TRF members, I am really confused I like both of them. Both watches are from official Rolex and Omega stores. And does the price seems a bit high for the rolex watch since they didn't do any discount ? Cheers |

This is really not comparable models but I would want the speedy over the DJ every day of the week.

The Datejust for me! The 116200 looks beautiful.
If I were buying a speedy, I would go for the classic 3570.50. There are way too many Speedy limited editions, IMHO, that has dilluted their significance. |

The Speedmaster 40th Anniversary is a wonderful piece, but IMHO the price is a bit steep for what it is. Keep in mind that the Speedmaster has a manual-wound movement that you have to wind every day. And it has a hesalite (plastic) crystal that scratches easily -- but also polishes easily. If you're fine with those properties, then it could be a very nice pick. However, for quite a few proposed customers those properties are considered as limitations.

Which model number is that? Omega is sometimes not 100% clear about those things, so make sure to pick the right watch for you.

not even close...the speedmaster. however, for that price, i'd get the sapphire sandwich or the 50th Anniversary Patch with the gold horse. you can get bigger discounts on omegas as well.

I did my best on the speedy and the final price was 4,300 but for the DJ they dont give any discounts I mean the Rolex store they are fixed, the rolex is too classic and i think its too expensive for a steel only watch but still i can afford it.

Maybe it's just me, but I can't stand the sapphire sandwich Speedmaster (3573.50), since it has an untruth statement on the caseback ("The first and only watch worn on the Moon"). Plus, it has a different movement to what is used in other Speedmaster Professionals these days.

No, just my opinion, how many different LEs are there out there though? seems like they bring them out every 5 minutes.

The one LE that retains it's value well is the 50th Anniversary model.. It actually represents 50 years of the Speedy... a worthy use of the LE designation.. But, it pretty much seems that you are leaning toward the Speedy, so get it... It is well respected and loved my many, many WIS... Like others have said......... These two watches are so different, there would probably be a distinct line on both sides of the fence who would insist on one over the other..

That particular LE model (the Apollo 11 40th Anniversary) does indeed look nice, but most LE models are not so different than the 3570.50. But Omega still charges premium for them, just because they're LE. If those LE models were all limited to no more than 500 pieces, then I'd like them, but some of them are limited to 8000 or 10000 pieces -- that's not a true LE in my book.

In 2007 they rolled out two LE models (50th Anniversary, 50th Anniversary "Patch"), in 2008 they rolled out the "Alaska Project", in 2009 they rolled out the Apollo 11 40th Anniversary (in fact, it's two LE models, again), in 2010 they rolled out the Apollo-Soyuz 35th Anniversary. That's quite a bit more frequent than one in every 5 years

I love the DJ, just not on the jubilee, or with the dial shown. If it were on an oyster it would be a tougher choice. I'm not a lover of that speedy either lol, much prefer the saphire sandwich. Back to the point, out of the ones you have shown, I'd go for the speedy. Best of luck!

Every collector should have an Speedy and an DJ. So, whichever you picked, you won't go wrong.
If budget isn't an issue at this point, buy both. Problem solved. |

If you go with the Speedy, get the true icon which is the 3570.50 and talk to Fr. John for his AD info to save a bunch of cash. The speedy pro is a watch that all true watch lovers need to own, it is just amazing on the wrist. Look under the Omega sub forum for more positive comments on the speedmaster, I just can't say enough.
Another plus with the speedy is that you are not stuck with wearing only a bracelet, pick up some Hirsch or Di-Modell straps and you have one watch that can look different every day of the week.

sorry, i can't help much with this one...the watches are SO different, i'd need to know more about your situation and what you're looking for.
the speedmaster IS an icon, but, i'm not sure the model you're showing it the one i'd go for. to each his own! |

If you had that kind of money to play with, I'd get a non LE Speedy Pro and a quartz Aqua Terra - you get essentially both watches you're choosing between. I wouldn't bother with the 40th anniversary LE because:
a) It's essentially a standard Speedy Pro with a couple of medallions and a fancy box. Definitely a hesalite crystal instead of a sapphire b) The £1500 premium is unjustified (IMO) c) It's not limited enough to justify the premium. I might also add that in my experience, the LE has been a very slow mover. Some interest, but I think people have cottoned on to the fact it's not a great deal. As for the Aqua Terra, I think it's a great looking watch, and at the entry price point, very reasonable on the pocket. In an ideal world, I'd take the cal. 8500 version, but for the purposes of the watches and price range on hand, the quartz fits the bill very nicely. Hope this helps Chris |
