Why Bother Buying a Rolex if...

My family has purchased some high end watches (1 lange & sohne, 2 baume & mercier and 2 Rollies!) and I guess I do have a love for watches.... but one of my close friends recently asked me a question and i didnt know how to respond.

He himself knows about all of the fake rolexs and how good the Fakes could be. So he asked me "What's the point in buying a real rolex if the fake ones work just as well?" I mean the fakes still have swiss movement in them and they're not BAD watches by any means. (If a dude's timex could last for 20 years, im sure a fake rollie still priced at 1000$ would last just as long!) That got me thinking... I didnt know how to respond to this question because I just love rolexs... and if someone showed me a fake rolex and i just glanced at it i probably wouldnt be able to tell the difference.

I would NEVER wear a fake rolex and try to pass it off as being real but for the most of us who arent watch experts, what difference would having a real as opposed to a fake one have? I guess it would be more of an internal problem rather than an external one....

what is your view on this? and how would you respond to a question like this?

The difference between a REAL Rolex and a FAKE one is just one word:

Conscience!!!

Got one? There's my answer!!

There are a lot of good reasons not to buy a fake Rolex which include but not limited to:
1. It promotes very high level organised dcriminal activity to purchase a fake Rolex;
2. You are committing a civil wrong against Rolex in purchasing a fake Rolex and possibly a criminal offence;
3. The quality of materials and workmanship in a Rolex in unsurpassed, try going swimming or diving in a fake and see what happens.
4. It says very little about the individual who will proudly wear a fake as a real Rolex.
5.Try taking your fake Rolex to get a warranty claim or repair.
There are probably a lot more reasons, but the forgoing should be more than enough to substantiate your contempt for fakes.

Hmmm..this is a good thread. I just received my second rolex today via FedEx. You could ask why buy a Mercedes whereas a Honda Civic can accomplish the same job. Question is who are you really trying to impress? Why would you tell a stranger you wearing a Rolex? I guess people do what they want if they can afford it. It doesn't have to make sense. Thats why we come to this forum because the outside world would makes us feel bad about what we want to buy with the cash. Here, I can be myself and be proud to own a Rolex. I may seem odd but thats why I am here.

This doesn't just apply to Rolexes. Why spend time and money going to university when you could get one of the mail-order degrees that you always get spam about? Hell, both certificates say you're a graduate, don't they?

There are two kinds of people in this world - the ones who make a point to do things right and the wannabes. The ones who do things right have the luxury of living with a clear conscience and being able to say "What you see is what you get - it's 100% natural, baby". The wannabes are always looking over their shoulders to make sure they don't get caught out and humiliated, and then having to fumble with lame excuses. We each have to work out for ourselves what kind of life we want to lead.

vic_the_pro - until I came on this forum I too wasnt sure why the fake watch market was so bad... there's the obvious reason of copyright but for me the real sealer is supporting criminal activity, that is just the biggest no no. I'd hate to spend upwards of a grand on a watch that would just line the pockets of potential criminals, terrorists and high level organised crime.

I'd say most people just see a fake Rolex and go hey nice watch, always wanted one of those.... oh has a japanese movement, ooh it feels solid what the heck I'll buy it and try it out. Without knowing all the background on where these watches come from and whom profits from them. Most likely they just wouldnt give it a second thought.

Buy a Seiko, a Tudor, an Oris hell buy anythng but dont worry about buying Folex!!!

Anyway thats my newbie 2cents worth.... how'd I go Lol-x are you proud???? You were the one that educated me too

What is wrong with a Honda Civic?

I also don't go around telling people i'm wearing a rolly... in fact other then my wife... and the guy i bought the watch from and the fund manager from melbourne whom i was talking to about our Sub Date... no one else knows i'm wearing one... most of the time in office, i wear a long sleeve shirt.. i don't wear watches on weekend.

The reason why i would buy a real one... (or the reason i told me wife) is that we need to do some charity at times!

I was told... not sure if it is true.. perhaps someone can shed some light on this...

Rolex apparently is a non profit organisation. IE the profit, all or part is actually donated to charity organisation, thru some trust the founder set up. The company is never to be sold to another owner, and never to be listed in any stock exchange or have any other stock holder...

So i guess i am doing my part to feed some african kid dying of starvation. versus buying a fake, and feed some gangster from nigeria....

Good point about the Civic, Henry. It's not as if it's an imitation Mercedes.

It's not accurate to characterise Rolex SA as a non-profit organisation. It's definitely a company that operates for profit. What it does with the money it makes is another matter altogether.

Mercedes and Honda is akin to Rolex and Seiko. The Honda and Seiko are real. They have their reasons to be and are legal and genuine.

The Folex is akin to a degree mill diploma, yes, absolutely. It is like stuffing socks in your bra (or trousers). It is selling yourself as an MCSE because you had to do a system restore one time on on Windows XP. It is a complete fraud with no regard to honor, class, or intestinal fortitude. It is the man who, rather than taking the hard step of training to be a policeman, straps on a gun and a badge and drives around town feeling like an officer.

If you can look in the mirror and fool yourself, you will believe anything. Maybe these examples are of people who think they can fool the world, but in reality they are the gullible ones. And when you fool yourself, who is the real fool?

There is NO SHAME in not being able to afford a Rolex! I see a 19 year old kid with a $300 Seiko and he is proud that he has saved for it and got what he wanted. Good for him! Fantastic! I share in his joy, really I do. He has no idea why, because i have a Rolex. I assure him that he will have one eventually, and to enjoy the Seiko. I had a Seiko at his age too. He smiles. He *knows* he will have a Rolex. That is the beauty.

A fake Rolex robs you of the personal responsibility and desire to put forth the effort needed to attain a goal. Save up, get the watch you really want, whether it is the $300 Seiko or the $30 Timex and I will think highly of you.

Might be a "long speech" but very well said.

Why would you want to buy a fake anything not just Rolex. As most of the good folk here have already said, rather spend the money on a real lower priced watch than a fake.

There is nothing wrong with a Honda Civic. I am just saying you can buy whatever you want to. Personally, I would not buy a $9500 Rolex Daytona then jump into a Honda Civic as my only transportation. For me, I feel you work hard and want to achieve some status in life. I would not max out my credit cards to buy a $10,000 Day Date and then go drive off in a 1985 Volvo. People do that, but I feel success takes time.

Yep. I agree with this too... It just isnt right if your car is worth 10x less than the watch on your wrist. To me it just spells out mid life crisis. I know people who live in a hut but drive a porsche... i dono i just would never do that.

Folks find it funny that I think $40 for shoes is too much, but $4000 for a watch means something is missing. :-) I personally do not care about shoes is all, like some folks spend $300 on shoes and don't care about watches.

We all want status and express it in our own minds as I have arrived. Ain't nothing wrong with whatever makes you feel good about yourself. The idea of walking into an Rolex AD picking out a $5000 Rolex and pulling the cash out to pay for it is an exhilarating experience. You better believe you get a discount for paying cash. I think every human should experience that.

I did that with camera gear. I had a fanny pack full of hundreds. I asked to see a camera and then to see a lens (Canon 35-350). He did not want to take it out of the box and asked if I wanted to buy it. I threw the cash down on the counter. That was FUN.

Nowadays I used AMEX to get double the warranty and the mile points.

I put Folex's up there with hollywood movie star hair extensions and fake tans...everyone knows it's just for show.

Especially those that have real hair and tans.

As far as the folexes go, who in the world is going to approach someone to pull up there sleeve and inspect your watch with a jewelers luop? Give me a break..who actually knows for a fact that another guy or gal is wearing a folex?? who sits up in the house thinking about how many people they are going to walk up on to check for authenticity? This is not realistic. I would call the cops if I was approached by someone grabbing my arm to see me watch. Citizens arrest!!

This has actually happened to me a couple of times! lol. After a girl knows me a for a while they might want to know what brand watch I was wearing lol. But i definitely dont show it off. by the way, I have a pair of 40$ sneakers that I LOVEEEEE. and I think you can tell how much you love something by how much you use them. I had these shoes for 2 months and they got burned out because i was using them vigorously playing tennis. Its like a book... if its not well read theres no point in buying a book! lol

Buying a rolex is an investment.. you can also say it's a heirloom or inheritance to your children and so on compared to a fake which is pretty much worthless!
