Tag Heuer Monaco "Steve McQueen"
Is this a good deal: $6399 plus tax for the limited edition "Steve McQueen" re-edition Monaco chronograph with the cal. 15 movement, two straps, presentation box, and maybe a book on S. McQ.? This would be BNIB from an AD.
It is this one http://www.tagheuer.com/the-collection/monaco/index.lbl |

This is the 40th anniversary Monaco that was released last year and has the Calibre 11 movement (the new ETA/ Dubois Depraz Calibre 11, not the Heuer Chronomatic Calibre 11).
Price is OK- not high, not a bargain. dc |

Thanks, Cal. The Tag site says, "Powered by the famous Chronomatic Calibre 11, the Monaco is also the world’s first automatic chronograph." That is pretty unambiguous wording, if you ask me. What's the source of your info? |

Pleasure Marrk,
They're talking about the original Monaco, upon which this re-edition is based. I've got some more info on the "new" Calibre 11 on my website here: http://www.calibre11.com/tag-heuer-a...at-went-wrong/ The movement in the Autavia re-edition is the same as the one used in the Monaco that you are looking at. Sadly, the Chronomatic Heuer movements went out of production in the late 1970s....and while the old Calibre 11 movement is famous, it was only in production for a couple of years from 1969 before being replaced by the Calibre 12. Many people with vintage Heuer's think their watch has a Calibre 11 movement- very, very few actually do. David |

the new one looks great and i won't say a single thing against it.
with the new, it rides smoother, stops quicker, turns tighter and is more sleek but it just isn't the same as the original. remember there are so sites that that estimate total production from 1969-1974 as low as 4800 total and i've read elsewhere mid-5's for a model that had a dozen or so variation that isn't many when i got the one that i still have. i guy swear up and down it was a 11 maybe the 69-70 models with chronomatic marked dials cheers |

Does yours have "Chronomatic" on the dial? If so, its definitely a Calibre 11 and even rarer than the "normal" Steve McQueen Heuer Monaco.

Cal,
Thank you for correcting me and thank you for generously sharing your knowledge. I gather that the calibre 11 was in and out very quickly, and that the watch McQueen, in fact, had was a calibre 12 Monaco. Is that right? How much would I have to pay a) for a vintage calibre 11 Monaco and b) for a vintage calibre 12 Monaco? I skimmed ebay and a few other sites and came up with $6-7k USD, but that doesn't sound right. Hi Mark,
There is no way externally of telling the difference between a Calibre 11 and a Calibre 12 Monaco watch. However, the very first series of the Monaco (including the one that has "Chronomatic" on the dial) has a metallic blue dial rather than the pale blue of the later series. Yes, there is a very big premium for watches with Chronomatic on the dial, but not much (any?) premium for a pale Blue Call. 11 Monaco vs. a pale blue Cal. 12 Monaco. Depending on whether you want original box, papers, etc a fair range for a good-very good 1133B Monaco (The McQueen model) is USD8-10,000. Possible to go lower in price, but you get what you pay for... Cheers David |

Well, David, those prices are high, but not high enough to make $6399 for a "replica" look very attractive.
If I come across a vintage one in California, I may look into it. BTW, may I assume from your forum name that you are a fan of the watch? I think that the vintage Monaco is really extraordinary and very beautiful. I especially love, for example, the way they solved the problem of hour indices on a square dial. |

mark, IF YOU HUNT! you'll find one at the price we'll willing to pay
i am gonna tell you a said story for me. but a good story for a guy i trade with in houston tx. nawcc regional del-mar ca. nov/09 table holders set-up walked in and dropped (alway drop> time to shop) across the isle was a man i never saw before doing a full set up (not a drop and shop) out comes the watches well, i made a right instead of a left (he pulled two rolls and grabbed the one on the right) you guess it, a fellow trader that lives in houston grabbed the one on the left. pulled a monaco with the NSA metal band and heuer buckle and ask the price. i held my breath. well he bought it (4000) there out there. thats how got the 73633b (orlando fl.) (blue dial, 3 blue registers) they pop up. JUST BE READY condition as calibre11 say's is everything and B & P is MORE!!!!! the good news the heuer has a service center in new jersey a C.O.R., crystal and a case finish can do wonders NOTE: always exam the dial closely. the crystal gasket after a long while gets a little runny. and maybe on the dial (edge). but if it's price accordly>>buy it |

No problems Mark- yes, I'm a big fan and have two Monaco's- a McQueen blue (1133B) and a Calibre 15 Silver (1533G).
Agree with everything that Blaine says, especially about taking care with the condition of the dial- these old gaskets melt! David |

Tag 1133b
Just picked up this original blue face tag 1133b - original owner.
I am a rolex guy(5508, 6542, 6238,1675,1680, 1665, etc) so any additional history would be great. |
