Exp II: is the price right?

I've been offered a used, Z series, Explorer II with a black dial for $3750. It has it's box and papers.

The watch was bought in 2007 and looks like it's been thoroughly used. The bracelet has a lot of scratches but none too deep. I'm sure it can be refinished. What I'm concerned about is the moderate stretch on the bracelet and a few scratches on the bezel, but not on the markers.

I'm sorry I couldn't take any pics but based on the above info would $3000 be a good price?

Yes, for a Z-series in the condition you've just described it, 3K would be a more appropriate price. You must consider that you will also have to spend a few $$$ with a professional watchmaker to recondition the watch.

$3000 is a steal. Hopefully you can get it at that price.

For Z-serial, mid 3K is more likely. It's even hard to find older one for less than 3K these days.

In addition to taking the watch to an AD what other things should I verify if I should end up buying the watch?

How much would a white dial cost? Also, I'd probably have to surrender the black dial to Rolex if I do the swap.

Would you guys suggest swapping the dial?

Dial color is personal preference. I like either. If you are having the watch checked, have it checked before the purchase. I suspect a dial change will be $300 or $400.

If you can buy it for $3k that is a great great price... as long as the crystal is 100% and the watch has no issues you're ok don't worry about the band and the bezel 5 minutes job with the watchmaker...
Good luck and go for it

In the condition you described, I think $3K sounds fair. Sounds like you'll need to spend another $500+ on service and some work.

I've made a counter offer of $3000. The seller said he'd had a few other offers and would get back to me. So let's wait and see.

In reality, I'm a bit luke warm about the Exp II. However, at $3000, if it check out o.k. I guess I can always sell it without taking a hit.

I will have the movement examined by the A.D.; as the watch is only 2.5 yrs old I dont think the movement needs an overhaul. If everything is allright I'll probably end up spending $50 to refinish and ultrasonically clean the watch.

Something I can't reverse is the stretch on the bracelet. How much would a new one cost?

is it a late z-serial? of course, the newer movement does add a little more to the watch - at least in terms of the exp2 selling trends. having bought, owned, and sold a pre-owned late z-serial exp2, i think that i would never have given it up for $3k. as observers, we can sit here and say, 'try to get it for the $3k'... but how do you feel when someone low balls you? i certainly never took those offers seriously and have known better than to make an offer that was obviously too low.

then again, if it does not have the 3186, then it will be no different from an earlier serial, in which case shop around more and find one that has been taken better care of. by the way, it is a fantastic watch and should be on anyone's radar.

Yeah, maybe I should wait for a better specimen to turn up. The perfectionist in me would be constantly nagged by the stretched bracelet.

On the other hand I could buy a new bracelet which I've been told costs app. $500-600 and still come out none the worse.

I'm surprised to learn that the new movement would make a significant difference to the price.
