Missed a datejust today!!
Was at my local Goodwill today, hunting for books and stereo gear. I had not found a decent watch EVER in a thrift store, so often don't even look. Well, I must have been in the store 20 minutes today looking at odds and ends, while the whole time an old 60's beater Datejust was hanging out in the watch case. On my way out, I decide to take a glance, and there is the watch, marked at $69.99, with a man staring right at it waiting for assistance. DAMN!! If I had looked first of course it would be mine....I don't get envious when I hear of others good fortune, but when it is seconds away and right in front of me...well I almost cried.
It seemed to need at least a crown, had a stretched Jubilee band, but was ticking. I let the buyer know it would run him at least $700 to fix but he was unpreturbed. I gave him my card and told him I would pay $200 for it later if he lost interest. I could have fixed that watch up in a few days. Anyone else have an "almost had" like this? |

It is a pig in a poke, you do not know what you have until you open the watch up, it may have a non Rolex movement. The Rolex movement may be worn out and cost big bucks to fix it. The replacement band is $$. So it just is a gamble on what is inside the watch. Another thing is it could be a fake and then you are just out of money.

Not a fake. It had the "piepan" dial with the beveled outside edge like were used in the early '60s. A white gold bezel, even, although it was slightly yellowed a bit, and very worn down.

I have seen stranger things in this world... the clerk at the store had no idea what was in the case...

I was at a pawn shop in Nashville a few years back and an elderly man came in with a vintage TT DJ and a 14K pie-pan Constellation. The broker paid him $450 for both and told me he wouldn't come back. He offered me the pie-pan connie for $600....take it or leave it. I was offended....at the time I was into vintage Omega's and didn't give the Rolex a second thought

Not on a Rolex but about 15 years ago when i was collecting militaria at a garage sale I drove up and noticed 2 WW2 era chests closed for sale for $200 each and walked by looking at other stuff(thinking like normal they were empty).Next I see a guy loading them up and going through 1 of them in a hurry to leave. They were full of ww2 dagers, swords, flags, maps etc.I offered him 5k on the spot and he laughed. The old ladys that were having the yard sale over heard my offer and asked me if I was crazy.I asked her where she got it and she told me her husband brought all of it back from Germany after the war. I was at a loss for words. She told me it was junk.I don't know exactly how much was in there but the 1 sword was worth what I offered back then.

Pretty similar but not a rolex! It's a Gibson Les Paul Custom Black Beauty that was sold in a flea market for 100.00! I was seconds away from picking it up when this dude suddenly grab it and without any hesitation pulled a bill and pays for it! I offered him 700.00 and he just smiled and left with the biggest annoying grin in his face!

My brother was recently at an auto show, and they were giving out lottery tickets to
the visitors for a chance to win a free car. My brother maneuvered in the lineup to get closer to the employee handing out the tickets, and the guy behind him complained that my brother had stolen his spot in line. My brother, who weighs over 300 lbs., looked back at the complainer, who was not much more than half that size, snorted in derision, and stayed where he was. You guessed it; my brother won the car.
God helps him that helps himself, I guess. Don't be shy. |

People who bully themselves in life, acting like your brother will get screwed back ten fold! He should be glad someone did not go postal and seek revenge on the spot. People who have your attitude are making the world go to hell real fast, I would venture to say you would take a Rolex off of a dead man. |
