Why GMT?

Can someone explain this to me. I have always loved watches and finally I have a Rolex that I can understand and enjoy. I would love to have a sub or SD in my collection again, but the family comes first, so one Rolex it is. My question is What is the GMT Master all about?

What is the affair about the watch? What is its history? I get the Sub and the Explorer, but who is the GMT for and who does it speak to.

Thanks
