Why is the 34mm version of the DJ called a Date vs Datejust for the 36mm version? I know the movements are the same and they are almost identical in every other way but the size and dial and metal options.

Am I shortchanging myself by going for a Date instead of DJ?

I really like the engine turned bezels. The polished domes and fluted bezel on the DJ don't appeal to me.

I know one should buy what they like, but resale/trade/demand is always at the back of my mind.

Pick the one you like and enjoy it. You can always get a second one. I would expect a price difference for the Dates (lower) in the used market. I can't address the new models.

The Oyster Perpetual basic model comes in two versions.. the Basic, and the Date.. bracelet and dial selection is limited. The older OP's were 34mm but the new Oyster Perpetuals are 36mm.

the Datejust is it's own model and has the largest variety of options available of any Rolex model.

Whether you feel that you are shortchanging yourself is a personal decision............

This is Rolex market segmentation at its finest! Launch more models to appeal to as many buyers.

I would go for the larger dial in every wristwatch decision. IMHO the only time to go with a smaller watch is if you intend to wear it under sleeves and the cuffs keep catching on your watch and it bothers you.
