I really want to buy another Rolex but....
I am having the hardest time buying another 40mm watch. Recently it feels like my brain has been fried with all the women I am seeing wearing 40mm watches. All of my wife's friends wear watches in the 38-40mm range, and here I am wearing the same sized watch and I am about 100 pounds heavier than them. I recently got a comment on my pepsi GMT from a lady in a store then she proceeded to tell me she wears the same watch, it was actually embarrassed a bit. My local AD said they can't give away the women sized watches, women are buying up the 40mm sport watches these days. 10-20 years ago men wore more yellow gold, now ss rules the men's watch world. I am starting to think that in 10-20 years, 40mm watches will be the norm for women.
What do you guys and gals think? I seriously was going to pull the trigger on another Rolex, but now I am finding it hard to buy a mid-sized watch, and yes, 40mm is mid sized these days. I am holding off for the new sub, I think the super case gives the illusion of a wider case. That feels like it is my only hope for another Rolex, why couldn't they go a little bigger and keep up with the times? The funny thing is, I am a old school kinda guy, I fight change and love the classic Rolex sport models. I am curious to hear other members thoughts on this subject, I can't be the only one feeling this way. Here I am with money in hand, and can't bring myself to buy a watch from the brand that has always been my #1. I have never been the kind of guy to follow trends, but my last purchase was a 46mm dive watch from another well known brand, and my wife said it is the best looking watch I have ever owned or currently own.

I like the 40 and just over 40 size. I love the size and look of the new sub (it will likely be my next addition). Size matters but it depends upon how the size looks on your wrist. How about wrist shot of the watch your wife calls your "best looking watch"? Good luck!!!

40 mm looks great on both sexes...why should it bother you that a woman is wearing the same size watch you are? Does it bother you when women drive the same size cars?

Tricky topic with lots of opinions both ways on this site. I tend to agree with you, but I haven't put my flame retardant suit on yet so I can't be more direct.

I wouldn't worry Trevor, women's styles change rapidly. A year or two from now they will probably all want to be carrying pocket watches or ring watches or necklace watches or something altogether different and then it will all be OK again.

40mm is not mid-sized, its a man sized watch.
Do you also need to wear bigger heels than women? Or huge rings? Women's fashion shouldn't dictate what you wear if you are a man.

I bought a coke gmt then a panerai gmt88. The coke left in favour of a ss ceramic gmt as the it had the supercase. Now my 4 month old gmt IIc is going and the deepsea will be here in a week.
Yes 40 mm watches feel small to me. My Pam 88 is 44mm the deepsea is 43mm and I will be picking up an iwc big pilot which is 46mm. I am also picking up a sub no date for my wife as that is the trend for women now.

I am not a fan of big watches and never will be....I think it's a fad...I may get flamed but I actually think the majority of them are vulgar......40mm is big enough in my opinion.....in 1986 when I got my first DateJust 16030 quite a few people said to me "wow, Rolex, they are brilliant, but I could never wear such a big clunky watch"....I still think 36mm is big......I've got used to the three I have in the 24 years or so.....and now also have three 40mm watches.....I will never buy anything bigger......JMHO

Going out last night...had on my sub...thought about the DSSD..put the Sub back on. Wasn't in the mood for a bigger watch. That's it for me...I like to have the choice.
+ it makes no difference to me what size watches women may be wearing...I like the 40 on my wrist...as I do 43, 44,45.. I did panic that I was off 40 at one stage...but it was just a stage...now my GMT ii Pepsi and Sub LV (Black) are my favourites

I'd either look at Breitlings Skyland Avenger Chrono, or the Fortis B-42 Marinemaster for a no joke mens size watch. The GMT IIC would be next. Don't look st whst the women are wearing. They will be out of style like Brittany Spears cowboyboots. Capri pants are still making a come back, but I buy clothes for thr function, as well as look good. I pick out what I like, and move on

You might want to consider some of those Invicta, tuna-can sized watches. I see lots of women wearing jeans, too, but I'm keeping mine.

Well I see some can relate and have an intelligent conversation, others are just to immature and find themselves on the defence for some reason. Funny how you can really see peoples personalities in how they reply.
I do love the Panerai's that i have owned, been thinking real hard about another. I still have 40mm watches, and I like them but just feel like they look small on my wrist, especially when people half my size are wearing them and the fit looks perfect. I love my 42mm Speedy pro, and it feels and looks appropriate on my wrist. IMHO, 45-46 is pushing my limit, but I think many models in this range are proportioned just right and look great on a man's wrist. I was just looking for some other thoughts pertaining to watches sizes these days, for those who made a intelligent reply, thanks for contributing.

Oh crap...the infamous, "40mm is too small" or "40mm is just right" or "40mm is too big..." blah, blah, blah 'debate'. Of all 3 of those statements, the correct one is = ALL are correct.
The fact of the matter is every man (and woman for that matter) are different sizes, with arms & wrists that obviously have different sizes too. A 44mm watch on my wrist, proportionally, looks identical to a 40mm watch on my friends wrist (and yes, he 3 inches shorter and about 50 lbs less). If we switched watches you could very easily say 'my' watch looked too small for my wrist and my friends looks way too big. Therefore, the size is not as important IMO as the proportion. That being said, I believe most people look fine with a 40mm watch, but I'm not one of them. Nothing less than 42mm for me...and it sounds like the OP has fallen into this category too. If that's the case, either buy a DSSD or YMII or look at other brands...there are plenty out there that are just as good as Rolex IMO. Or, join me in the long, long wait of praying Rolex will finally offer a 40mm+ Daytona WITH date...but I digress...that a 'debate' for another day & thread. Cheers! |

Nothing wrong with 40mm and I don’t understand being embarrassed if a women wears the same watch. Lots of great watches out there: Deepsea, Panarai, the Omega Broad Arrow is 42mm, Planet Ocean. Get a big watch, and put it on when the mood strikes you.
I'm with you on women wearing larger watches. Bought the girlfriend a 28mm Seamaster Pro Black on Black with sword hands. It just seemed small and she had a 28mm Tag Heuer. Bought a mid-sized Seamaster Pro Black on Black sword hands, but when it arrived it was a full size. I guess the guy didn’t know the difference between 36mm and 41mm. Sold them both and I’m up $500 bucks. I think maybe this was meant to be and remembered how she lit up at the AD looking at Rolex’s. Purchased a 34mm Airking 14000M black dial. She is small and it is perfect.

For me the ideal size is any thing between 36 to 42mm... Anything bigger than that just looks silly on me! And... Yes, I do see a lot of women wearing 40mm watches now, but so what! As long as it looks good on your wrist and you feel good about it then just wear it!

I do not mind women or men wearing large watches, as long as it is proportional, well fitting, etc. And it goes both ways. More and more men are wearing colourful bracelets, in many ways looking like they were made by their children (and I am not trying to insult anyone saying this, I am wearing bracelets made by my daughters ;-). As long as it goes well in colour, fit and so on I am fine with it. All this said: I am also influenced by the size issue, and have stopped using 34mm watches... but I am willing to start doing that again if I find one that goes well with the style I am after. Best, A |

I think the point here is that the current fashion is obviously for women to look like they are wearing what is clearly a man's watch - one that is too large on them. It's not meant to appear as if they are wearing a woman's or midsize watch.
Also by men adopting the same look using oversized watches - ie. a contrastingly large watch making their wrists look slim and feminine or childlike, seems to be missing the point - that it's a fashion for women. There is no worse look than a man looking like a noodle armed, choir boy with an giant clock on his wrist. |
