Am I vain? Well... yes, but as to Rolex.

I have been traveling the last two weeks, meeting a lot of people, and (maybe suprisingly) a lot of fellow WISes. I was startled by how much attention (envy) my Daytona got. I always thought it was a special watch, some of you will agree and some won't, to each his own, but every knowledgable TRFer has to admit the Daytona is a very coveted model.

So it got me to thinking (which usually hurts), how much of the love I have for my Daytona is due to the envy of other's that want one? It's kind of like when you've got a really hot girlfriend, (for me, this never applied of course), and your friends meet her, and are enthrawled; that makes you like her that much more.

So, I know I'm vain and selfish, self-centered, egotistical- you get the point But how much of our desire for a Rolex is derrived from having what others want?

I got to stop thinking now... I'm getting a headache.

None for me Paul. But I can understand the Daytona attention...very few are seen at AD's so that makes spotting one in the wild a real treat.

Daytona doesn't do anything for me. Really, the only Rolex I ever coveted was the Blue TT Sub. I got it just for ME. If anyone else desires it, good for them. It that just shows their good taste.

Not much, Paul. It's my own personal desire of a specific Rolex model that makes me want it more.

I think the Daytona is a beautiful watch myself, but I don't have any desire to own one. I would have to say that of all the Rollies I see in the wild, the majority seem to be Daytonas. It seems that when I see one, it's usually, not always, on a macho, egotistic, arrogant, use car salesman-type, and a no-watch-knowledge jerk. I used to want one, but they don't seem very "rare" at all and I have only seen one or two on people that I thought had some class, so I don't have any desire to have one anymore. I know that not everybody that owns a Daytona is like that, but that just seems to be who I see them on most of the time. I don't know if anybody else has the same experiences, if so, let me know.

My current beater (a junky quartz) has been mistaken for a Rolex many times (despite zero resemblance). On the other hand, a cousin of mine gets nearly no attention for his DJ. So for me, the envy of others is a non-factor; most people can't tell which watch I'm wearing anyway.

People always say that they dont wear these watches for anyone else but themselves but I think thats a tad delusional. Thats like a woman saying that even if she was on a desert island and NO ONE else was around she would still want breast implants. No matter how much we want to think that we do things only for ourselves, we dont, that is human nature. So if you dont feel that way in the least bit you are in the very small minority of humans. I have done the research on this very topic at the university level. I wrote my MD/PhD thesis on over 5yrs of research. Literally less than 0.05% of people do things ONLY for themselves and not because of what others may think. So delusional or not....either you are in the less than 1 percent or you are like the rest of us. LOL That is the BOTTOM LINE!

Honestly, I probably would have acquired the Daytona model before any other Rolex model, if only the model included a date function. Sorry, call it a matter of personal preference or taste, etc, but it was literally a deal breaker for me. Having a date function is first and foremost for me on any watch.

Aside from this critical fact though, the Daytona is an amazing and very appealing piece indeed. Finally, I could care less about what others think, be it what clothes, watch, etc, I own or wear. Again, all personal taste, what I'm most comfortable with and prefer. If they do like it, cool. If they don't, well that's okay too. BEST REGARDS

Totally agreed, there is always a little of this in any purchase of something luxury.

I think this is exactly what the OP is getting it at, I think some have missed the point here, the OP was using his Daytona as an example but putting out the question for any Rolex purchase, he was not asking whether folks are envious of his Daytona.

This is true at any level.

People tend to think Rolex watches are fake before the real thing in my area, though.

luxury items that people envy/jealous of, tend to stereotype as "look at me" i have this high end item. As long as you are happy w/your purchase, its all that matters and not in financial debt by making that purchase. Too many $30k millionaires out there living beyond their means, only to come home with their mailbox full of bills. I only purchase high end items that i can afford and pay w/cash for the most part.

I'm sure if my coworkers or friends knew i purchased 2 rolexes in last than 6 months last year, they think i'm crazy and wasting my $$

Living in the UK I don't see many people wearing Rolex, I have ever seen on SS Daytona though I have bought 5 from AD at retail. However I might see alot of Rolex when I go to HK this summer.

I guess it is OK to be a bit vain, when it comes to the finest chronograph caliber made. In your case you seem to be aware of it too, and that's good. Continue to enjoy it!

Best,

I love the Daytona - I am a car and race nut therefore it's suitable for my passions. I see gold Daytonas and swoon... even though I promised myself a long time ago I'd never wear a gold watch I admit I too would wear a gold Daytona.

Regardless - you should be proud of what you own. I am proud of my Sub even though it's your typical Rolex... it is my first - certainly won't be my last :D

I think it can be fairly said that I purchased my watches for myself.

I work and socialize with people who have no interest in wristwatches. They have no idea what I'm wearing. Neither do my relatives. In fact, I have watches whose very existence is known only to me and the people who sold them to me.

So it happens.

Paul we RIS people have good taste in watches and everyone of us has a vision of a grail watch, your Daytona is a grail watch and you worked hard for it. Now you should get a girlfriend since you have a Daytona and if not you can rent one by the hour.

My gral is a 5513 and the vision is comming together.
