EXPLORER - Sports watch or Sporty Looking watch!! LOL!!
Hi guys,
I know all you Explorer lovers are going to flame me, but the question is pretty straight forward!! I mean, it's a great looking watch, especially the new 39 mm model, but it has been categorised as a sports watch with absolutely NO functions at all!! So, as far as I'm concerned, technically it's a superb SPORTS LOOKING watch and that's about it. Okay, guys, flame away...........I'm all ready!! But I still love ya all!! Cheers - JJ

JJ, the Explorer II Polar is one of the best watches ever made.
Rugged, comfortable and stealthy. Especially with the 3186 it's one of the best. A real sportswatch, you can'tdo anything to it a light polish won't fix. Sportswatch it is. Jack |

The Explorer has some function as well....
It shows the time! No, seriously: For me, a sports watch has to be waterproof and robust, and that's it. Tom |

sports watch for sure - it's built to handle anything and with no PCL's you don't have to worry about scratches while you climb the Rockies lol

JJ, sport watches are usually more rugged and durable than other watches and are frequently equipped with additional features that are tailored to particular sports. However, since I would say that the Explorer is more rugged and durable than other watches, it qualifies as a sports watch.

Not only are the explorers sport models.......they're "stealth" Rolexes...you don't see them as often as subs or datejusts....and as pointed out, the expl. went up Everest.

I am with esm on this, its a black dial dress watch. It may have been up Everest at some time in its life but Rolex never had all the models they have now.I bet you it wouldn't be the first choice now for an Everest climb.

As said above. For me a sports watch only has to be waterproof and scratch resistant! Explorer? Definitely a Sports Watch. :)

Really more of a sporty looking dress watch - not that there is anything wrong with that!

A FULL-BLOWN Sports Watch - Both Models...
As many posters have said,
Made to be used in tough environments, Oyster case which is bullet proof, Oysterlock clasp on what is largely considered a bracelet without peers, nothing shiny or dressy, legible, low key...and supremely comfortable which means they can easily be worn while enjoying any sport IMHO ! |

First one must define "Sport". Hemingway stated: “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely games.” SO, since the Explorer went mountaineering up Everest, I guess its a sports watch...and a darn good one.

The explorer looks like a datejust to me without date nor flute bezel... on a oyster band. I think it looks more like a dress watch with a hint of sportiness.

Sport watch - end of story - take it to the bank - I think it's the original too, right?

The Explorer 1 was probably a "Sports Watch" when it was designed, the 1950s.
Today it could be more accurately described as a dress/sports watch. I wear mine with both a suit and jeans as it works well with both. |

It was a sports watch--and then the lug holes went away, along with lume at 3, 6, 9. Now it's a dress watch that references it's tool watch heritage (imo).
The MKII Vantage is a nice homage to the sports version of the Exp I. |

Well I always thought the "sports" nomenclature was weird to begin with, not just with watches. So a "sports" watch needs to have a function other than telling time? What exactly does a "sports" car do then? Does it plays sports? Do you use a sports car to play sports? Is a "sporty" car just an adjective to describe a non-sports car that has "sports car" like characteristics?
Ironically enough, in most sports you would neither use a watch nor a car. If a sport involved cars, it would most likely be a race car right? I much prefer that nomenclature Rolex and other high end watch makers use to describe non-dress watches, which are their "professional" line....i suppose to imply that the watch was designed to be used professionally, or by professionals.... ;) |

For me, the Explorer is the purest of all the sports watches, with a nice heritage to boot - love the clean, simple look. It's designed to tell the time in the harshest of environments, and I can't think of a watch better suited to the job
