Appraisal questions
Hello everyone,
I'm looking into Jewelers Mutual to insure my two Rolexes and ofcourse they require an appraisal. I went to a local AD who said I could drop off the watches and it would take approx two weeks. The other said it would take about a week, but their appraiser works 9-5 everyday?? This AD is located in the shopping mall. Is this the norm? No same day appraisals? I really don't want to be without any of my watches for two weeks when no service is even required. Also, any experience with Jewelers Mutual, are they a sound company? THANKS |

I had an appraisal done at Dallas Gold and Silver exchange in Dallas while I waited.

Did Jewelers Mutual say you must have AD do the appraisals?
Most nice jeweler stores can do an appraisal in an hour while you wait - at least in my area they could. |

I don't think they require a Rolex AD for the appraisal.

Definitely too long of a wait. I had my appraisal today. I called yesterday to schedule an appointment with the store owner and came in today. He took the watch apart as I sat and watched. Took a little under an hour and results will be e-mailed/mailed to me and to my insurance co. in 3-4 days.

I don't believe Jewelers Mutual requires an AD appraisal. You're better off going to any jeweler than can perform the task while you wait.

The jewelry store I work for does appraisals for insurance all the time. The store owner charges a small amount for his time, but most average $90 an hour, or a small amount per item.
Any reputable jewelry store can do an insurance appraisal. It basically means the store would be able to replace the item for that price. You would need a new appraisal after a few years to keep up with. Current jewelry prices. The store I'm at knows a good bit about vintage watches. Other stores may not know anything about watches. A phone call should be made prior to having a watch appraised due to the removal of the caseback, and bracelet for inspection. Unless your insurance has a specific rule, a good jeweler should be fine. |

My independent appraiser charges $100 for 30 min...that's enough time for this two finger typist of a "jeweler" to crank out 1 or two appraisals. For that fee, I get a PDF describing my Rolex + a stark photo of the watch. All he basically does is match the serial with the papers, looks up the current retail price on a piece of paper, types up the appraisal and emails it to my State Farm agent. I would not go through this if State Farm did not require an appraisal.

My AD carried out the appraisal during the recent service, so I got my DJ back with the appraisal for the insurance. Another local AD can do appraisals on the day, and it takes about 1 hour at the most. Cost approximatley $30.

I found an AD who would do it same day so I went in, he took the watch in the back for literally 3 minutes. He looked at my warranty card and commented that he'd never seen a card like mine since it was from South America, but its fine and I was out. He advised he would have my appraisal in the mail by end of the day.
Is that the norm? |

It will be nice to see a scan or picture of the appraisal here when you get it.
