SS Daytona at Tourneau
My wife and I decided to have lunch in Waikiki and while there I figured I would go to Tourneau and have them look at my Bremont because I might need a new crystal. The watchmaker was not in so the guy was taking to me and asked if I was in the market for anything. I told him I am getting an SS Daytona at the end of the month.
He said we have one here. I wanted to see it and sure enough in their display case was a beautiful white face SS Daytona retail price $16,000. I almost chocked I am paying almost half that I am sure no one on this forum would ever cough up 16 grand for an SS Daytona. I didn't ask but I am sure you could talk them down to MSRP at least, even so that's some mark up.

Wow! I bought mine in Brazil for USD 12k. And here we have to pay many taxes! It doesn't make sense.
BTW every Rolex AD in Sao Paulo has the SS Daytona, black and white, in stock. Cheers Walter |

We have a wonderful expression here in Georgia for what you described with a $16K retail price for the Daytona..... "they must be whistlin' Dixie!" For those not from here the translation is "they must be hoping for somthing that is never going to happen!" Cheers y'all, Bill P.

Same thing in their K of P Pa store. White face $15,900. I thought it was the same one that's been there for months but the salesman said this one is the third one, they sold 2 in the last couple months, all around the $16k price. Somebody doesn't know what they're doing.

if they are marking them up that high and selling them, they must know what the market will bear. Supply and Demand, we can think all we want about them but they are the best in the world (financially) at what they do. -Pete

Dealers shouldn't be authorized to do that, even if it's pre-owned. It's bad for the image and reputation of the brand.

But they should be "authorized" to sell below MSRP?! I guess this isn't the place to debate supply and demand. Nobody forces anyone to buy a Rolex or pay retail or above. Again, I have had bad experiences at Torneau because they are snobs in NYC and Long Island but I don't blame them for making as much as they can on a watch that is very in demand. -Pete

About three years ago while in Las vegas I looked around the big "T" at the Forum shops. They had a white face SS Daytona in the preowned case for $16K. The sales lady explained that it was actually a new watch being sold as preowned. It came with their in house warranty and not the Rolex warranty. No Rolex box or papers were included or available. She explained they just sell it as preowned but it came out of the safe. Looked new to me. At the time they were very hard to get and I wanted one really bad. I actually started thinking of buying it. The nervous stomach feeling and beads of sweat on my forehead were an internal "Don't be an idiot" alert and walked away.
Fast forward to now and I've recently passed on two SS Daytona's from local AD's as my interests have evolved/changed. I instead went with the GMT-ll 16710 and the Subdate 16610 and couldn't be happier. They just epitomize the classic tool watch for me. |

The Daytona is still THE stainless watch for me, bar none.
GMTIIC had my ear for some time, but I lost desire for it. Hype's not dead.

Same deal... T in DC had a M serial Daytona in the case today selling for 14900.... When I asked them why the price was so high they basically told me because people are willing to pay for it - in fact he said they sold one in that price range within the last 2 weeks!
But the hype is dead right? LOL |

16k for a Daytona is crazy ,when you can pick up 1 here or many other dealers in the UK for around £6,000 [pre owned]
Mine is just gathering dust in my safe , never wear it , the hype has well and truly gone for me. Thinking of swapping mine for a vintage 1680 red sub maybe ? N. |

That's Amazing!
I just realized that is cheaper to buy an airplane ticket to Sao Paulo, Brazil, spend three days at a really nice hotel and buy a brand new Rolex Daytona @ the local Rolex AD than buying it @ Tourneau! Hey americans! Could you please print this post and hand it to Tourneau guys? :-) Maybe you'll get a discount! There is a sucker born everyday. Like PeteNYC13 said they price it based on what people are willing to pay. In NYC there is plenty of money and people don't think twice buying a Daytona for $16,000.
Having said that I still hate Tourneau and they way they treat people. I have never had a good experience there and now I refuse to even step foot in one. I will never patronize one of their stores even to just browse. |
