Day Date Platinum Question
I was at an AD the other day picking up a watch I was having repaired and on my way out I stopped by the Rolex display case to look. An older gentleman came by and we started talking about the Rolex Day Date Platinum that was in the case. He was wearing one that was a few years old (an F series I believe). The clerk then joined us in the discussion. The clerk, albeit very friendly, told the gentleman that the Rolex he was wearing was fake. He couldn't believe it. In fact, I thought he was going to have a heart attack. The hands on his Day Date had the lume and the clerk said that this reference never had this. The gentleman said he purchased the watch second hand a few years ago from his attorney and it came with box and papers. The clerk said there wasn't anyone else in the store at the time to help authenticate it. I was running short on time and had to leave so I don't know what the outcome of this was. Does anyone here know if this is true?

The AD is incorrect. I have seen platinum Day-Dates with lume, both tritium or lumina, depending on the year. The later models are even offered with lume batons (ice blue dial) and matching hands.
I would've blasted that clerk and asked for the manager so she could be properly trained. Even at Turdneau, the salespeople are trained not to offer an unsolicited opinion about a customers watch. |

I don't know if it was ever offered that way, but if you can afford a platinum DD, or any rolex, you can afford to have whatever hands you want to have installed. I would want to replace mine with lumed hands if they were not available, and I would simply get some.
Never trust an AD. When this guy finds out that it's real, that store will almost certainly lose a well heeled customer.

I think the clerk may well be correct.
Whether it was his/her duty to burst the guy's bubble is another matter. Should have just concentrated on selling the one in stock to him.

It depends entirely on the dial. If it was a baton dial, then the hands would be luminous as well - if it was a Roman dial, for example, then it wouldn't be right for the hands to have lume.

I love that 118206! Just perfect. Stealth ultra luxury, but those in the know would recognize it immediately.

I really didn't appreciate the clerk being so blunt and telling the guy his watch was fake. He took it rather well. I'm sure he'll find out she was wrong. The watch he was wearing had diamond markers if that matters.

Frank, I'm afraid it's another case of an AD employee not knowing his a$$ from a hole in the ground. Romans, diamonds, etc do not have reflective hands, but stick marker dials do. If the dial wasn't stick, it could have been changed somewhere along the line and the hands weren't. Happens all the time, I've even seen it with the wrong date wheel left in the watch after a dial change. RSC would never do it this way, but non-RSC watchmakers do it all the time.
I can't imaging the what would make the employee say that, even if it were the case. |

+1 Very poor form for someone in the customer relations field.
