rolex verses omega
Hi guys i poped into an AD today and I was looking at a omega seamaster coaxle planet ocean with the 3dials and orange bezal on a stainless bracelet, wot a gorgeous watch, it seems as big as my deepsea, the AD said the movement was better tech than Rolex, he said 10Years before serviceing and it is more accurate, £3200.00 with 15% discount, it seemed like a good buy to me, ime loyal to Rolex but this watch did impress me, sorry no pics, ime away for a break and I am doing this from my phone, wot do you guys think of the model?

The co-axial automatic chronograph movement used in the Planet Ocean Chrono is famous for being absolutely not reliable. I wouldn't place it anywhere near a Rolex chronograph movement. I'm not trying to open up a floodgate of Omega vs. Rolex debate here at all. I do own an Omega, I do not own a Rolex. I reckon most Omega watches are fine, some may be considered better bang for the buck than their Rolex counterparts, and some look very-very cool. But if you want a nice chronograph from Omega, go for the MoonWatch instead (Speedmaster Pro 3570.50). Or, in the case you love the look of the Planet Ocean, then get the non-chronograph version.

Get what you like. Omega makes great watches, but obviously I lean toward Rolex.

And if you were looking at a Rolex the AD would have said that Rolex is the top of the line movement and that nothing beats it.
They are trying to make a sale. Do your own research and buy what you like don't listen to the sales pitch.

Love the PO & on a 'bang per buck' basis I believe they beat Rolex hands down.
Ultimately I lean towards Rolex as opposed to Omega although simply for 'brand/personal goal' reasons if I'm honest.

The early co-axial movements were notorious for problems when they first came out, but most of the bugs have since been fixed and I wouldn't hesitate to buy one now. I own an Omega and a couple of Rolexes and both brands perform equally well.

I'm still not sure the cal. 3313 (used in the Planet Ocean Chrono) is right just yet. We've had a couple of new watches with this movement malfunction recently, as well as a couple of cal. 8500 based ones. From my point of view, anything other than the cal. 2500 seems to still be having teething problems.
As for a 10 year service interval, that's outdated sales information - Omega say it's closer to 5-7 years, the Co-Axial escapement and the detuning of the movement to 25k BPH haven't been quite as successful as they'd initially hoped. 15% off is a good deal, but it seems that your AD is being a little overenthusiastic |

I have 2 rolex and 2 omega. One is the 42mm PO co-axial. The most precise timekeeper is the PO. It was set two months ago and kept on a watchwinder when not in use ( got to give my other boys their turn) and is 2 seconds out. Extremely accurate IMO

I have 5 Omegas, including the PO chrono and a regular PO. There has certainly been alot of concern over the 3313 movement in the chrono version. I know several of the guys on the watchuseek Omega forum were freaking out about it. How true are the rumors? It's anybodys guess. I've had my chrono for over 2 years and haven't personally had any problems with it. That being said, make your own judgement of the Omega chrono. The rumors didn't prevent me from buying the watch and I'm very happy with mine.

I own both. I bought the Omega when I couldn't afford the Rolex. I think Rolex makes the better watch (in-house movement, better customer service, more classic styling), but not enough on a part-by-part to justify the price difference. In the end, the Rolex is more than the sum of its parts, and that's why I like it.

IMO - there is always a room or two for Omega in every Rolex collection.
The PO is a winner IMO! |

It's all good
I have 3 Omegas and 1 Rolex. No complaints whatsoever. All are accurate and attractive.

And yes, the 10 year interval was an overshoot from Omega with the introduction of the co-axial. Though the esacapement has less friction than traditional lever escapement, the rest of the movement needs lubrication just as any other mechanical movement. |

Actually, I was talking to a watchmaker at a Rolex AD (which did not carry Omega) yesterday and he was telling me how impressed he was with the co-axial design, and that, in time, he felt pretty certain it would be widely adopted. I did not press him with any sort of "which is better" type of question, because I knew his answer would be far beyond my ability to appreciate it.

I have a large Planet Ocean non chrono version and I really dig it, but obviously that is not the model in question. I agree with you however, please don't get one with that orange strap, I can't stand it, go with the stainless bracelet.

Buy used on the Omega as the moment you walk out the door the value drops like a stone (40%). The 3303/3313 is reputed to be a great chronograph movement. The PO is a good looking watch.
I really prefer Rolex for value, reliability and classic designs, but I love my Speedy.

I had a somewhat similiar adventure when looking for my first Rolex. The experience actually convinced me to go elsewhere. The sales guy gave me some wrong info, some of which he was just echoing things I said which I really did not know any better. He told me I was getting a steal of a deal which I found out later to be incorrect. I conducted some research. I was now a bit better informed, however I decided to go elsewhere to get my watch.
